Eleven-year-old Evan Green doesn’t want to save just one tree-he wants to save a whole rainforest!

In the Redwood City, Calif., a boy started a group called the Red Dragon Conservation Team four years ago to do just that. So far, the team’s members have raised $4,500. That’s enough to purchase and protect more than 16 acres of rainforest in Costa Rica through the Center for Ecosystem survival.

Every year, thousands of square miles of rainforest are destroyed worldwide. Logging(伐木) and farming are mostly likely to blame, scientists say. The loss is terrible news for animals and people. Even though rainforests cover less than 2 percent of the earth, they are home to half the world’s plants and animals. Rainforests also provide water and help control the earth’s climate.

Evan’s work to save the rainforests recently earned him a Barron prize for Young Heroes. The prizes are given to children or teenagers who have made a positive difference in the world. Evan’s goal is “to save enough rainforests to last forever”. He won’t have to do it alone. His actions have already inspired other kids to chip in. One girl asked for donations instead of presents on her birthday. She raised $850. Other kids are starting their own conservation teams.

Evan says everyone can help the planet-even by taking small steps such as recycling. He and his family try to make a difference every day. “We recycle, we try to limit our garbage… we’ve been walking a little more, and we buy local food,” Evan said.

Two University of Oklahoma scientists are starting research that they hope will someday lead to the development of a vaccine to fight against the HIV virus, which causes AIDS.

The research, to be carried out by Mark Lang, an assistant professor at the OU Health Sciences Center and microbiologist John West, will examine the basic aspects of the immune system, rather than the complex aspects of the virus.

They theorize that if a key function of the body’s immune system can be found exactly, it could be the first step toward developing a vaccine.

“To develop a new vaccine, we realized we first have to study and understand the immune system,” Lang said.

Lang said their work will focus on researching the basic antibody responses from Natural Killer-like T-cells. A potential vaccine would contain NKT cells and would improve the immune system’s antibodies, which fight outside invaders(侵入物)such as HIV by preventing them from entering cells or giving the immune system enough of a boost to kill them.

NKT cells, which have been a part of research into cancer and other diseases, have not previously been the focus of HIV research, Lang said.

The research will last 18 months, with tests being performed on mice. The Oklahoma Center is giving $300,000 toward the research, and if the research proves promising, Lang and West will apply to the National Institutes of Health for more funding.

“If we are successful, we will have made an important contribution to the field, but we will still be several steps away from an effective vaccine,” Lang said.

Lang said that in best-case scenario(最好的情況),their research could lead to a vaccine ready for use in about four years.

The research to be carried out will focus on _______.

Many people will remember the flight of the space shuttle (航天飛機)Challenger , in June, 1993. The achievement of Sally Ride, America’s first woman astronaut to fly into space, made this flight especially memorable. Students from two high schools in Camden, New Jersey, however, are likely to remember Norma rather than Sally whenever they think about the flight.

Norma didn’t travel alone. She brought about 100 companions along with her. Norma was an ant, a queen ant who, with her subjects, made up the first ant colony (群體) to travel into space. The ants were part of a science experiment designed by the students to test the effects of weightlessness on insects.

The equipment designed by the students for their colony functioned perfectly throughout the long space trip. The young scientists and their teachers were very sad to find that their insect astronauts had all died at some point before the container was returned to the school and opened. The problem did not occur in space, but on the ground after Challenger had landed. The container remained in the desert for nearly a week before the ant colony was removed. The hot, dry desert air dried out the colony’s container and the ants died from lack of moisture (水分).

The project was termed a success because it did provide useful information. Students will continue their efforts to find out exactly what went wrong. They will try to prevent the same difficulties from recurring (再發生) on future missions . They don’t want to be discouraged either by the death of the ants or by the $10,000 shuttle fare they will have to pay to send the next colony of ants into space.

49.On the next space trip , ants        .

A.will be sent without people    B.should not be left in the desert too long

C.will have to pay double fare   D.will escape the trip completely

A.things talked about B.lessons you study at school

C.words stated in a sentence      D.members ruled by a ruler

                               D

In the age of reality television, success isn’t the only way to the public eye. Failure can also create fame, just like William Hung, 21, a native of Hong Kong.

Hung recently has made an agreement with US-based entertainment firms Koch Records and Fuse Music Network. They will publish a full-length record, titled “The True Idol (偶像)” on April 6.

The idol is a civil engineering student at the University of California at Berkeley. He did a version(改寫本)of Ricky Martin’s “She bangs” on the television show “American Idol 3” on January 27. The Fox TV singing contest searches for pop stars among ordinary people. In the case of Hung, however, his act was so bad that the judges cut him off in mid-act.

Hung’s response? “I already gave my best, so I have no regrets at all.” That’s good, because any common person would have plenty to regret: the off-key singing, the blue Hawaiian shirt worn with pants pulled up too high, the terrible dancing, the hips jerking (搖擺) to a beat that did not belong to the song, maybe not even to this planet. It was, by all accounts, bad.

But, it was this very bad act that sold well.

Marc Juris, president of Fuse, explained it this way: “Every one of us is happily guilty of singing our favorite song at the top of our lungs with complete freedom, completely off-key and completely unworried. That’s what William did and immediately won the hearts of America.”

Whatever it is, for the moment it’s big. Three websites devoted to Hung have gone up on the Internet in the past few weeks. Versions of his performance have been remixed with hip-hop and techno music and have made it to the top 10 request list at a Chicago radio station.

So, what does Hung think of this?

“There were all these people saying things about me. A lot were saying I was very courageous and that I was great on the show, but some didn’t have much respect for me and some were kind of mean.”

Now, he says he’s not so sure whether to distance himself from the glamour (魅力) or to accept it. Returning to normal hasn’t been easy.

51.What is the main idea of this passage?

A.Sometimes an idol behaves quite foolishly.

B.Hung’s performance attracted the public eye.

C.How an unsuccessful person became famous.

D.Success sometimes does not require hard work.

52.Hung was popular in America for all the following reasons EXCEPT ______.

       A.his shirt and pants   B.his off-key singing

C.his hips jerking        D.his excellent version

53.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 6 refer to?

       A.William Hung.        B.Hung’s bad act.

       C.Hung’s website.              D.The public’s opinion.

54.Which of the following shows the correct order of what happened to Hung?

a.   The entertainment firms made an agreement with Hung.

b.   The judges cut Hung off in mid-act in the singing contest.

c.   Hung became popular among Americans.

d.   Hung gave a terrible performance though he tried his best.

A. d b c a         B. a c d b        C. a d b c        D. d b a c

55.Why was Hung able to win the hearts of America?

A.His success was based on his own hard work.

B.He attracted people’s attention before the contest.

C.He was good-looking though he didn’t sing well.

D.His character was completely different from other idols.

第II卷 (非選擇題,共35分)

第三部分:寫作

第一節  閱讀表達(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

In a classroom in any country, the teacher teaches more than art or history or language. He or she teaches what is known as the “hidden course”---- the culture of that country.

In a society such as the United States, people with different history, culture and language join together and they highly value individualism (個人主義). Their education, as a part of the society, also values this greatly. Teachers try to make each student special. Students do not have to memorize a lot of information, instead, they work individually and find answers by themselves. There is often discussion in the classroom. At an early age students learn to form their own ideas and opinions. Their education encourages personal thought. The importance is placed on how to arrive at an answer and not simply to get the correct answer.

In most Asian countries, people have the same language, history, and culture. Perhaps for this reason, the education there shows society’s value in group goals and purposes rather than individualism. Children in China and Japan often work together and help each other on homework. In the classroom, the teaching methods are often very traditional. The teacher says, and the students listen. There is not much discussion. Instead, the students repeat rules of information that they have been taught in order to keep them in mind.

In many ways these differences come from different educational psychology (心理學). In Western countries teachers are taught to nurture (培養) students. They make it easier for the students to learn for themselves. In the Orient, however, teachers often feel that their task is to pass knowledge to students, or the students can’t learn anything.
