"Know the world and let the world know China," I can't remember clearly where I saw this slogan (口號) in Beijing. When we consider the number of people going abroad each year, we can tell how hard China is trying to know the world. But I didn't know how important it is for the world to know China until I came to the UK.
In my first class in the UK, I told my British classmates I would go back to China when I finished university, and they looked at me in great surprise. In their opinion, everybody will stay in the UK to look for a better life after going there.
When I asked my friend for advice about buying a new car, she looked at me in surprise, "A new car?" Later I found out her surprise was because of the popular opinion about Chinese students: Either we are poor or we only spend money on necessary things.
When other Chinese students and I for the first time joined in the monthly performance, sang some traditional songs or gave a short funny talk show, all the British teachers and students were surprised. To them, Chinese students are so serious and shy.
What can we do to let the world know China? It should no longer just be a slogan. We all should do something, at home and abroad, with confidence and openness (自信與開明).
