Dr Wiseman started “the laugh lab” project in September 2001. It is the largest study of humour. Participants are invited to log on  to the laugh lab website, give a few personal details , tell their favorite jokes and judge the jokes told by other people.

The project will last for a year, and the organizers hope to finally discover the world’s funniest joke. But there is also a serious purpose, the researches want to know what people from different nations and cultures find funny. And they want to find out the differences between the male and female sense of humor. The idea is that if we want to understand each other, we have to find out what makes us laugh.

This is a subject that has long interested psychologists and philosophers. Most of the time, people are not completely honest. We do things that society expects us to and say things that help us get what we want. But laughing cannot be controlled. When we laugh, we tell the truth about ourselves.

By December 2001 over 10,000 jokes had been submitted(提交). This gave the scientists enough evidence to make early conclusions. It seems that men and women do have different senses of humor, for instance.

“Our findings show the major differences in the ways in which males and females use humor,” said Dr Wiseman. “Males use humor to appear superior(優越的) to others, while women are more skilled in languages and prefer word play.”

Researchers also found that there really is such a thing as a national sense of humor. The British enjoy what is usually called “toilet humor”. But the French like their jokes short and sharp: “You’re a high priced lawyer. Will you answer two questions for $500?” “Yes. What’s the second question?”

The Germans are famous for not having a sense of humor. But the survey found that German participants were more likely to find submitted jokes funny than any other nationality. Perhaps that proves the point. Is this joke funny? I don’t know, but let’s say yes, just to be safe.

Dr Wiseman and his workmates also submitted jokes created by computer. But none of those who took part in the survey found any of them amusing. Perhaps this is relief. Computers already seem like they can do everything. At least they should leave the funny stuff to us.

閱讀理解
Almost every day we come across situations in which we have to make decisions one way or another. Choice ,we are given to believe, is a right. But for a good many people in the world,in rich and poor
countries, choice is a luxury , something wonderful but hard to get, not a right. And for those who think
th ey are exercising their right to make choices , the whole  system  is merely an illusion , a false idea
created by companies and advertisers hoping to sell their products.
The endless choice gives birth to anxiety in people's lives. Buying something as basic as a coffee pot
is not exactly simple. Easy access to a wide range of everyday goods leads to a sense of powerlessness
in many people, ending in the shopper giving up and walking away, or just  buying  an  unsuitable  item
(商品) that is not really wanted. Recent studies in England have shown that many electrical goods bought
in almost every family are not really needed. More difficult decision-making is then either avoided or
trusted into the hands of the professionals ,lifestyle instructors , or advisors.
It is not just the availability of the goods that is the problem, but the speed with which new types of
products come on the market. Advances in design and production help quicken the process. Products
also need to have a short lifespan so that the public can be persuaded to replace them within a short time. The typical example is computers , which are almost out-of-date once they are bought. This indeed makes selection a problem. Gone are the days when one could just walk with ease into a shop and buy one thing:  no choice, no anxiety.
1. What does the author try to argue in Paragraph l?
A. The exercise of rights is a luxury.
B. The practice of choice is difficult.
C. The right of choice is given but at a price.
D. Choice and right exist at the same time.
2. Why do more choices of goods give rise to anxiety?
A. Professionals find it hard to decide on a suitable product.
B. People are likely to find themselves overcome by business persuasion.
C. Shoppers may find themselves lost in the broad range of items.
D. Companies and advertisers are often misleading about the range of choice.
3. By using computers as an example, the author wants to prove that___________.
A. advanced products meet the needs of people
B. products of the latest design flood the market
C. competitions are fierce in high-tech industry
D. everyday goods need to be replaced often
4. What is this passage mainly about?
A. The variety of choices in modern society.
B. The opinions on people's right in different countries.
C. The problems about the availability of everyday goods.
D. The helplessness in purchasing decisions.

閱讀理解

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A、B、C、D四個選項中選出最佳選項。

It is hard to predict how science is going to turn out, and if it is really good science it is impossible to predict. If the things to be found are actually new, they are by difinition unknown in advance. You cannot make choices in this matter. You either have science or you don’t and if you have it you are obliged to accept the surprising and disturbing pieces of information, along with the neat and promptly useful bits.

The only solid piece of scientific truth about which I feel totally confident is that we are profoundly ignorant about nature. Indeed, I regard this as the major discovery of the past hundred years of biology. It is, in its way, an illuminating piece of news. It would have amazed the brightest minds of the 18th century Enlightenment to be told by any of us how little we know and how bewildering seems the way ahead. It is this sudden confrontation with the depth and scope of ignorance that represents the most significant contribution of the 20th century science to the human intellect. In earlier times, we either pretended to understand how things Worked or ignored the problem, or simply made up stories to fill the gaps. Now that we have begun exploring in earnest, we are getting glimpses of how huge the questions are, and how far from being answered. Because of this, we are depressed. It is not so bad being ignorant if you are totally ignorant, the hard thing is knowing in some detail the reality of ignorance, the worst spots and here and there the not-so-had spots, but no true light at the end of the tunnel nor even any tunnels than can yet be trusted.

But we are making a beginning, and there ought to be some satisfaction. There are probably no questions we can think up that can’ t be answered, sooner or later, including even the matter of consciousness. To be sure, there may well be questions we can’t think up, ever, and therefore limits to the reach of human intellect, but that is another matter. Within our limits, we should be able to work our way through to all our answers, if we keep at it long enough, and pay attention.

1.According to the author, really good science ________.

[ ]

A.would surprise the brightest minds of the 18th century Enlightenment

B.will produce results which cannot be foreseen

C.will help people to make the right choice in advance

D.will bring about disturbing results

2.It can be inferred from the passage that scientists of the 18 th century ________.

[ ]

A.thoutht that they knew a great deal and could solve most problems of science

B.were afraid of facing up to the realities of scientific research

C.knew that they were ignorant and wanted to know more about nature

D.did more harm than good in promoting man’ s understanding of nature

3.What is the author’s attitude towards science?

[ ]

A.He is depressed because of the ignorance of scientists.

B.He is doubtful because of the enormous difficulties in scientific research.

C.He is confident though he is aware of the enormous difficulties in scientific research.

D.He is delighted because of the illuminating scientific findings.

4.The author believes that ________.

[ ]

A.man can find solutions sooner or later to whatever questions concerning nature he can think up

B.man can not solve all the problems he can think up because of the limits of human intellect

C.sooner or later man can think up all the questions concerning nature and answer them

D.questions concerning consciousness are outside the scope of scientific research
