How old is old? The answer has changed over the years. Two hundred years ago, you were 35. That was the average life span(跨度) then. At the turn of this century, as medical knowledge advanced, the average life span increased to 45. In 1950, 70-year-olds were really old. Today, a healthy 70-year-old is looking forward to many more active years.

So, how old is old? The answer is one you heard many times, from all sorts of people. You are as old (or young) as you feel. The calendar simply tells you how many years you have lived. Your body tells you how well you lived.

Old is a point of view. Alice Brophy said, “It makes me angry when people say, ’Gee, you look young for your age. ’What does that mean? Is there some model that you are supposed to look a certain way at 65 and 75 and 85? You know you can die old at 30 and live young at 80. ”

There are many myths about aging. Here are some of the more common myths—and the facts.

Myth 1: Most older people are in poor health.

Fact 1: Not so. There are neither biological nor physiological reasons to connect poor health with growing older. Older people are more likely to be affected by illness but old age itself is not a disease. It is possible to remain physically healthy throughout your life.

Myth 2: Older people are unable to change.

Fact 2: Older people are as easily changed in their life-styles as young and middle-aged people. Though sometimes they deal with the very big pressures—death of loved ones or jobs, financial or family problems—they deal wonderfully well. Older people give up smoking and break other bad habits just as successfully as younger people.

1. The article is mainly about ______.

A. the average life span

B. aging

C. people’s health

D. life myths

2. According to the article, which statement is true?

A. Aging does not mean you become unhealthy.

B. Older people are not as smart as young people.

C. Most older people are physically healthy.

D. Your health can tell you how many years you have lived.

3. Which questions is NOT answered in the article?

A. Do older people have more trouble breaking bad habits?

B. Is old age a disease?

C. How old is old?

D. What is the average life span today?

4. The reason why Alice Brophy got angry was that ______.

A. she didn’t think she looked young for her age

B. she didn’t like to be thought old

C. she was 65, but people thought she was 85

D. there wasn’t a model to follow to judge one’s age

5. Which of the following does the second fact support?

A. Older people have more pressures than younger people.

B. Younger people break old habit more easily.

C. Old people are not too fixed to change for new needs.

D. Younger and middle-aged people have the same problems as old people.

There are a number of phrases built on the word “put”, such as put up, put out, put off and so on. The expression “putting one on” is among them. You tell a person something that he finds difficult to believe, and he may look at you more closely and ask: “Are you putting me on?” He doesn't think you are serious. Perhaps, you are joking with him, trying to test his reaction.

The expression putting one on is closest to the phrase to put one over on a person, meaning to trick him. However, in certain light situation, many will not say to you: “Stop trying to put one over on me”, they will say: “Stop putting me on.” And when one accuses you of putting him on, he is generally not as serious as he might be.

People who try to put you on are more often just joking, having some pleasant friendly fun. But one who is trying to put something over on you is not to be taken so lightly and usually he is not.

There are people who like to play practical jokes on friends, to put them on in strange way, some funny, some not. This is especially true on April Fool's Day. Year after year, numbers of people let themselves be fooled by the same joke. They just forget what had happened to them the year before. One of these often repeated jokes is a telephone call. The caller changes his voice and says to his friend: “Hello, is this Mr Jones? I have an important message for you from Mr. Fox. Please call him at this number.”The caller then gives his friend the telephone number of the National Zoo.

Unthinkingly, the friend quickly makes his call and says: “Hello, I must speak to Mr Fox. It is urgent.”

The man on the other end says: “Who?”

“Mr. Fox. I don't know his first name. Please hurry.”

The man at the other end answers:“We have no Mr Fox here.” Then he realizes it is a joke and he begins to laugh and says:“Look, friend, this is the zoo. Somebody is putting your leg, putting you on.”

1.Which of the following is true?

A.“Put one on” is often expressed and felt in a pleasant and friendly way.

B.“Put something over on a person” is often used among close friends.

C.Both are used to express the same feeling.

D.Playing practical jokes on friends are always funny.

2.Mr. Jones was not able to speak to Mr. Fox because ________.

A.the one who answered the phone didn't know Mr. Fox

B.Mr. Fox was not in at that moment

C.he called the wrong number and the wrong place

D.this Mr. Fox happened to be an animal

3.This article is mainly about ________.

A.the jokes people are likely to make on April Fool's Day

B.the meaning of “put one on” and how to use it correctly

C.the difference between “put one on” and “put one over on a person”

D.April 1st, a day when people will make fun of each other

第二節(jié):信息匹配 (共5小題,滿分10分)

Here are five letters from readers listed in 1-5. All the greetings and signatures are left out. Suppose you are a secretary of the magazine CR (Crazy English Reader), for each one find a suitable reply from A-F. Mark the correct letter (A-F) on your answer sheet. There is one extra reply which you don’t need to use.

51. I am a reader of CR. Recently I found students translate some articles of CR. I appreciate your offering an opportunity to us beginners to practice using English. So I want to ask how they can obtain these articles and translated them for you, and what qualities you require. Thank you.

52. I love your Crazy English Reader magazine! It provides valuable data for work in our English teaching. My wife and I are teaching Conversational English so I’ve been giving you a bit of a plug at our middle school. I told the students to “get a copy!” It’s good stuff! Fantastic!

53. I’m one of Yao’s fans from Guangzhou. I have read the Yao Ming articles in No.7 Crazy English Reader. I want to know his correspondence address and the official website. Could you please tell me? Thank you very much indeed.

54. First of all, I must say thank you very much to all the CE Reader editors who gave us a really good English magazine. Secondly, I want to give you a piece of advice. In each passage, you gave us some new words with their Chinese translation. However, as far as my knowledge, I think you should give us not only the Chinese meaning but also the English meaning so as to know the words more accurately. Thank you!

55. I am an editor of the English Monthly of our school. I have a question that is how to say the position of the paper e.g. and so on. I hope you can help me to tell me the word in English. The more the better. Thank you so much! I love the book very much. Now, I do this work, I need study more information about this work, if you have time, please email me. Thank you.

A.  Thank you for your suggestion. We may try that in some future issues of CR. I think the best way to improve your reading vocabulary is to be able to guess the meaning of the word from the other words around it. Also, if you have an English dictionary, it’s good to look up the words and then mark them down in a notebook and review them later on. Then if you really want to learn how to use the words, try using them in conversation or in writing. Hope this helps.

B.  The best way for you to learn the different positions in a newspaper or magazine is to get a copy of an all-English magazine or newspaper and then copy down the different positions. There are also titles such as Managing Editor, reporter, Copy Editor, Photo Editor and Layout Editor. I hope this helps. If you have some more specific questions, you can send them to me and I’ll try to answer.

C.The best way to reach Yao directly is through his home team, the Shanghai Sharks. You can write him at 2570 Xietu Road, Shanghai. For more information on Yao, you can look at the sports section in sina. com. I hope this helps. Another idea is that you can try to write Yao while he’s living and playing in Houston. You can try to reach Yao in the US at:   Yao Ming   Compaq Centre 10  Houston, TX 77046

D.  Thank you for being such a careful reader of CR. Yes, you’re right we made a mistake in the writing of that Chinese word. Each issue we try to read very carefully each article and its translation to make sure there are no mistakes, but unfortunately a few mistakes always get by. But you encourage us to keep improving, so thank you.

E.  Yes, we do have several students who help us translate some of the articles in our magazine. We contact these translators directly after interviewing their translation work. Afterwards we assign the articles to them for translation. If you are interested in being one of our translators you can send us some information about yourself and a sample of your translation work.

F.   Thank you for helping us to promote CR. We’re glad it’s helpful to your students. We always try to include articles that reflect real life. It’s our hope that CR will not only improve student’s English but also open up a different worldview.
