After the end of the Second World War, the Russians became very interested in space science, and they sent several rockets up above the air. The earth is surrounded by air, but this air doesn't stretch (延伸) upward for more than a few hundred miles, and 1 only about ten miles the air is so thin that no ordinary plane will fly in it. To go higher it is necessary to use a rocket, which will work excellently even when moving in outer space. The first rockets 2 into space carried no astronauts but scientific instruments (儀器), the next carried animals and when they were brought safely to the earth, the Russian scientists 3 a man. They chose Yuri Gagarin to be the pilot.

Flying a space ship is 4 flying an ordinary plane. Instead of sitting at the controls, the pilot lies upon a couch (睡椅).

The spaceship was travelling 5 5 miles a second—faster than any man travelled before. Gagarin did not get any feeling for the speed, and he could 6 the small round window of the cabin (船艙).

Gagarin was busy doing scientific experiments. Before long the spaceship passed into the Earth's Shadow. When it came out of the shadow again, the horizon (地平線) showed a bright orange colour. In space the sky looked black even when in the sunlight. It is only from the earth 7 the sky looks blue. When we look at the sky, we see the sunlight lighting up the air all around the earth. The air has 8 the other colours in sunlight, but reflects (反射) the blue light, which we see. In space there is no air to split up the sunlight.

Now, it was time for Gagarin to prepare for landing. This was perhaps the most dangerous part of the whole trip. If he came into the air too quickly, his ship would 9 the air, and this would make the ship so hot that it would burn up. The speed of the spaceship had to be controlled.

The spaceship dropped closer and closer to the ground until, when not far from the ground, Gaggrin's cabin 10 the rest of the rocket. Then the cabin, together with Gagarin, flew gently down to a safe landing.

They once seemed more at home on the bustling streets of Asia like Delhi, Calcutta and Bangkok but cycle-powered rickshaws can now be seen taking people across town in many European cities. Many people believe that rickshaws are a good way of experiencing a city close-up, while also cutting down on traffic jams and pollution.

In Berlin, one of the first cities to introduce this new mode of transport, more than 200 bike-taxis go along 15 km per hour, past many tourist attractions and city parks.

"It is completely environmenatally friendly; we have new models with an engine to help the driver up the hills but they use renewable energy," said a spokesman for VELOTAX, the leading rickshaw company which has carried a quarter of a million people this year.

While the city still has 7,000 motor-taxis, rickshaw company officials say their taxis' green ethics, speed and safety make them more than just a tourist attraction. While now increasingly out of fashion in Delhi, Berlin people have eagerly accepted the new fleet since their launch in 1997.

"It's better than a taxi, better than a bus, better than the train," said UlfLehman, 36, as he leapt out.of a rickshaw near the world famous Brandenburg gate. "It feels so free."

"This is something out of the ordinary you feel you are on holiday in Bangkok instead of Berlin,"said another traveler.

In Amsterdam, driver Peter Jancso said people like to be driven around in his bright yellow rickshaw and pretend to be a queen in a golden carriage. "I like my passengers to feel important," he said as he dropped another passenger. Another visitor noted how cheap it was compared with a normal taxi.

Although increasingly popular in Europe, it is the opposite in India, where hand-pulled rickshaws are considered inhuman and a symbol of India's backward paSt.

Nearly 500 bike-rickshaws are running in London and are not required to pay the city's road tax but things may change as other taxi drivers complain of unfair treatment.

36. Where are rickshaws becoming more popular?

A. Delhi, Berlin, Paris. B. Amsterdam, Bangkok, Delhi.

C. Athens,London, Berlin. D. Berlin, Amsterdam, London.

37. Why are rickshaws no longer as widely used in India as in the past?

   A. They are a reminder of a bad period in India's history.

   B. They have been banned because they are too cruel.

   C. The streets of India are too crowded for them to move through easlly.

   D. Indians now prefer to travel by car because they are richer.

38. What does the underlined sentence "This is something out of the ordinary you feel you are on holiday in Bangkok instead of Berlin"(para.6) suggest?

A..The passenger didn't like taking a rickshaw as it reminded him of Bangkok.

B. The passenger enjoyed being on holiday in Berlin more than in Bangkok.

C. The passenger was impressed when taking a rickshaw and considered it unusual.

D. The passenger disapproved of rickshaws because they were not original to Berlin.

39. Which of the following is mentioned in the text?

  A. Rickshaws may need to pay tax for causing traffic jams.

  B. Rickshaws and taxis are treated differently in London.

  C. Rickshaws will eventually take the place of taxis.

  D. Rickshaws will always be a cheap means of transport."

40. What is the author's attitude towards rickshaws?

Authorities will continue to take a hard line on Internet-based rumors and punish those creating fake information, a senior official said on Thursday.

Authorities have removed more than 210,000 online posts and shut down 42 websites since mid-March in their latest crackdown on online rumors, said Liu Zhengrong, a senior official with the State Internet Information Office.

Fake information or rumors spread through the Internet, especially on micro blogs, have harmed social order and residents’ daily lives, he said at a news briefing in Beijing.

Before the crackdown, six people who allegedly fabricated (偽造) rumors about “military vehicles entering Beijing” had been detained and 16 websites closed for disseminating fake online information, according to police authorities.

“What we’ve done and will do is to make sure residents can know what they want to know, say what they think and supervise our management in a reliable and useful network environment,” Liu said.

Liu disagreed that the Internet can police itself against rumors, and told China Daily that some netizens can’t distinguish truth from fiction, “requiring government departments and website companies to take measures”.

On Monday, the Internet Society of China posted a proposal calling on Internet companies and websites to strengthen self-discipline and prevent the spread of online rumors.

In response, three main Internet companies in the country - Sina, Baidu and Tencent - said they will target fake information with advanced technology and invest in manpower to supervise online information.

Zhao Zhiguo, deputy director of the Telecommunications Administration under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said stricter self-management of websites will help banish online rumors.

“Internet companies should take legal responsibility when operating their websites. They should not become a hotbed for rumors and provide opportunities for fake information,” Zhao said, adding they will launch similar crackdowns to close illegal website companies and punish those responsible.

Currently, people who make or spread rumors related to terrorism and securities trading, or information affecting State security and companies’ commercial reputations, will face criminal punishment.

Liu Honghui, a Beijing lawyer specializing in online cases, said he welcomed the government’s action to curb online rumors.

“Residents used online banks to shop or book flights, which needs a safe platform without fake information,” he said.

Yu Guofu, another lawyer from Sheng Feng Law Firm, said the key to reducing rumors is netizens themselves.

“If micro-bloggers think twice before forwarding information, rumors will decrease.”

53. How many websites were shut down before mid-March in the latest crackdown on online rumors?

  A. 42 B. 58 C. 16 D. 18

54. What does the underlined word mean in fourth paragraph?

  A. creating B. spreading C. providing D. operating

55. According to the passage, which of the following is true?

  A. Not all netizens can distinguish truth from fiction on the Internet.

B. People who have harmed social order will face criminal punishment.

  C. The Internet Society of China called on micro-bloggers to prevent the spread of online rumors.

D. Three main Internet companies in the country promised to launch more crackdowns to close

   illegal websites.

ZHUHAIChina will soon put a person into space and become the third nation in the world to have manned spaceflight, a tap Chinese aerospace(航空航天)official said on November 5.

A manned launch(發(fā)射) was not far off, Vice President Hu Hongfu of China Aerospace Science Technology Corp(CASTC)told a news conference at the third Zhuhai Air Show.“It will not be long before Chinese astronauts can ride locally - made spaceships into space,”Hu said. The official gave no timetable but said it would happen“at beginning of the 21st century.”

The former Soviet Union and the United States have been putting people into orbit since the early 1960s, but other nations have not considered the challenge worth following.

But the company, which includes over 130 aerospace agencies, said the lifting ability and success rate of China's space - launches were almost equal in quality to those of other countries.

China would gradually close the distance between its country's space industry and that of other nations. He added that they were willing to send up commercial satellites for Taiwan.

On China's plan to end up manned spaceflights, Hu said China had made important development after the successful launch in November last year of the country's first experimental spaceship, Shenzhou. “The whole project is in the research stage and a lot of work needs to be done,”Hu said.“We need to have more tests of the unmanned spaceship.”
