題目列表(包括答案和解析)

Part A

In 2001 the United Kingdom was hit again by foot-and-mouth disease, the first time since the 1960s, causing a national crisis. However, much of the panic and confusion was spread largely as a result of ignorance of the disease.

Foot-and-mouth is a highly contagious (傳染性的) disease found in Africa, South America, Asia, the Middle East and parts of Europe. It affects cloven-footed (偶蹄) domestic animals such as cows, pigs, sheep and goats, as well as wild animals like rats and deer and zoo animals such as elephants.Horses, however, cannot contract (感染) the disease.

It is very rare for humans to catch the disease.Indeed, only one case has been recorded in Great Britain and that was in 1967.

Part B

Foot-and-mouth disease is insidious (潛伏的) and can be spread by direct or indirect contact with infected animal. The disease can be spread in the wind, and can also be spread by people, equipment or vehicles which have been in contact with the disease.

Although the authorities do not really know where this latest outbreak of the disease originated, it can enter a country in frozen meat imported from other countries where the disease is common.Unlike Mad Cow Disease (BSE) and the human equivalent CJD, foot-and-mouth has no implications (影響) for the human food chain.Any meat, milk, cheese, and other dairy products can be consumed quite safely.

Part C

It seems that the only way to contain the disease is to kill infected animals. There is no cure for the disease, and although adult animals normally recover in 23 weeks, they sadly remain carriers of the virus (病毒) for up to two years.

From the time the disease was first reported to the time the epidemic (流行) was officially declared over, one and a half million and more domestic animals were slaughtered and large areas of the countryside were closed to the public. These areas included parks, woods and forests, and various leisure attraction situated in the countryside.

[ ]

A.to warn people of the danger of the disease

B.to describe the disaster caused by the disease

C.to share some of the facts about the disease

D.to declare the success in control of the disease

2.Foot-and-mouth disease is insidious because it is spread ________.

[ ]

A.by farmers and farm vehicles

B.in so many different ways

C.by being carried in the air

D.mainly by people who have been in contact with infected animals

3.How is foot-and-mouth different from Mad Cow Disease?

[ ]

A.It affects the human food chain.

B.People cannot consume dairy products.

C.It is found in frozen meat.

D.Meat is still safe to eat.

You know that pearls grow inside oysters(牡蠣), but would you ever think to look for diamonds inside an ostrich(鴕鳥)? Well, a hunter once shot an ostrich and discovered, to his great surprise, that the big bird had swallowed a bunch of diamonds. How could such a strange thing happen?
Like many other birds, the ostrich swallows small stones that stay inside its “gizzard”. The gizzard is a bird’s second stomach. It is where the food is ground up. The small stones help to grind up the food so it can be digested. The small stones do the chewing because birds don’t have teeth. In that case of the ostrich with the diamonds, the bird simply had expensive taste in rocks. It used the diamonds to digest its dinner.
Diamonds and stones aren’t all that an ostrich will swallow. If there are no stones around, it will eat just about anything. Sadly for ostriches in zoos, this can be a fatal habit. The tendency to swallow anything it sees has caused the death of many an ostrich. Cruel or careless people often throw things into the bird’s living space. They throw keys, coins, and even large objects such as horseshoes. The ostrich swallows them without hesitation. Coins can be the worst. Inside the ostrich they wear down to a razor-sharp edge. They will cut open the bird’s gizzard from the inside. When one young zoo ostrich died, 484 coins weighing more than eight pounds were found in its gizzard.

When you enter a crowded room or go on a picnic or to a party, who is the most attractive and appealing person? It is the person who is cheerful, has a smiling face and behaves as if he or she is enjoying every moment of the event! Such people have an optimistic opinion on life. They are the ones with a positive attitude. On the other hand, let’s see that fellow in the corner with a long face.He is most probably thinking about the time and money wasted in having fun.He is a pessimist, one with a negative attitude.
A person with a positive attitude gets on well with the job at hand.He doesn’t worry about what’s gone before or what might happen in the future. If there is a problem, he quickly thinks of ways to solve it.If the problem cannot be solved singly, he seeks help from someone else.He doesn’t feel that it’s beneath his dignity to seek assistance.
When Sonal lost her history notes days before an important examination, she sat down and cried. Then she pulled herself together, borrowed a friend’s notes, worked day and night and managed to copy down whatever she had lost.Sonal passed the exam with flying colors.
It’s just not possible, even for the greatest optimist, to smile all the time and feel good all day.Everyone has a period of blues now and then, when everything seems sad and without cheer. But once you develop a positive attitude, once you realize that life is a series of ups and downs, dark clouds and bright sunshine, in no time at all, you’ve bounced back, ready to welcome the world again with open arms and a huge smile! So from this moment on, keep your face to the sunshine and you’ll never see the shadows.
