Reading to oneself is a modern activity which was almost unknown to the scholars of old times, while during the 15 th century the word “reading” undoubtedly meant reading aloud. Only during the 19 th century did silent reading become a common practice.

One should be careful, however, in thinking that silent reading came about simply because reading aloud disturbs others. Research into the historical development of silent reading shows that it became the usual way of reading for most adult reading tasks mainly because the tasks themselves changed in character.

The 19 th century saw a gradual increase in literacy (讀寫能力) and thus in the number of readers. As readers increased, so the number of listeners dropped, and thus there was some reduction in the need to read aloud. As reading for the benefit of listeners grew less common, so came the popularity of reading as a private activity in such public places as libraries, trains and offices, where reading aloud would disturb other readers in a way.

Towards the end of the century there was still heated argument over whether books should be used for information or treated respectfully, and over whether the reading of material such as newspapers was in some way mentally weakening. Indeed this argument remains with us still in education. However, whatever its advantages, the old shared literacy culture had gone and was replaced by the printed mass media on the one hand and by books and magazines for a specialized readership on the other.

By the end of the 19 th century, students were being advised to form their own opinions on books and to use skills in reading them which were unsuitable for the oral reader. The social, cultural, and technological changes in the 19 th century had greatly changed what the word “reading” implied.

1.Why was reading aloud common before the 19 th century?

A.Few people could read for themselves.

B.Few people knew the value of silent reading.

C.There were few places for reading alone.

D.Scholars enjoyed themselves by reading their own works.

2.The development of silent reading during the nineteenth century showed      .

A.a change in the social position of the educated people

B.a change in the nature of reading

C.an increase in the number of newspapers

D.an increase in the people’s understanding of the mass media

3.According to the text, educators are still arguing about           .

       A.the importance of silent reading

B.the value of information given by books

C.the effects of reading on mental development

D.the value of different types of reading materials

4.We can learn from the text that “the old shared literacy culture” refers to          .

A.the practice of reading to oneself

       B.the practice of reading aloud

C.the reading of books and magazines

       D.the reading of newspapers

5.What is the writer of this text attempting to do?

A.Show how reading methods have developed

B.Introduce a new method of reading

C.Remind people of oral reading in old times

D.Encourage the growth of reading in the future.

I was in a rush as always, but this time it was for an important date I just couldn’t be late for! I found myself at a checkout counter behind an elderly woman seemingly in no hurry as she paid for her groceries.  Being a PhD student without a lot of money, I had hurried into the store to pick up some flowers. I was in a huge rush, thinking of my upcoming evening. I did not want to be late for this date

We were in Boston, a place not always known for small conversations between strangers. The woman stopped unloading her basket and looked up at me. She smiled. It was a nice smile—warm and reassuring(令人寬慰的)-and I returned her gift by smiling back.

“Must be a special lady, whoever it is that will be getting those beautiful flowers,” she said.

“Yes, she’s special,” I said, and then to my embarrassment, the words kept coming out. “It’s only our second date, but somehow I am just having the feeling she’s ‘the one,’” jokingly, I added, “The only problem is that I can’t figure out why she’d want to date a guy like me.”

“Well, I think she’s very lucky to have a boyfriend who brings her such lovely flowers and who is obviously in love with her,” the woman said .”My husband used to bring me flowers every week—even when times were tough and we didn’t have much money. Those were incredible days; he was very romantic and—of course— I miss him since he’s passed away.”

I paid for my flowers as she was gathering up her groceries. There was no doubt in my mind as I walked up to her. I touched her on the shoulder and said “You were right, you know. These flowers are indeed for a very special lady.” I handed the flowers and thanked her for such a nice conversation.

It took her a moment to realize that I was giving her the flowers I had just purchased. “May you have a wonderful evening ,”I said. I left het with a big smile and my heart warmed as I saw her smelling the beautiful flowers.

I remember being slightly late for my date that night and telling my girlfriend the above story. A couple of years later, when I finally worked up the courage to ask her to marry me, she told me that this story had helped to seal it for her—that was the night that I won her heart .

41.Why was the writer in a hurry that day?

A. He was to meet his girlfriend.             B. He had to go back to school soon.

C. He was delayed by an elderly lady.          D. He had to pick up some groceries.

42.What does the underlined phrase “her gift” (Paragraph 2 ) refer to?

A. Her words.                 B. Her smile.        C. Her flowers.             D. Her politeness.

43.Why did the writer give his flowers to the elderly lady?

A. She told him a nice story.                       B. She allowed him to pay first.

C. She gave him encouragement.                  D. She liked flowers very much.

44.What is the message conveyed in the story?

A. Flowers are important for a date.        B. Small talk is helpful.

C. Love and kindness are rewarding.         D. Elderly people deserve respecting.

The house was quiet at 5 am and Tim’s mother was asleep. Only the sound of the big freezer broke the quiet. He’d dreamt of the cave last night. The purring(輕微顫動聲)of the freezer had been the sea .

Tim pulled on a sweater and put some apples into his schoolbag. It was too early for breakfast. He’d eat after he’d been through the cave, sitting on the rocks and staring at the sea.

He wished he had a proper pack. His schoolbag would have to do. What else? Sandwiches—but his mother might wake up if he started pulling out bread for sandwiches, she’d want to know why he had to leave so early. He settled for some biscuits, and left a note stuck to the table:

Gone to Michael’s. Back tonight. Tim.

The sky was high and soft and light outside, though the sun still wasn’t up. Even the highway up the hill was quiet as he made his way down the street. The wind from the sea was fresh and sweet.

The sandhills still breathed heat from yesterday’s sun, though the top of the sand was cool. He ran down to the beach impatiently, but there was no one, just dry sand dancing in the early wind and seabirds marching up and down watching the waves.

The light changed suddenly. The first rays of sunlight stretched(延伸)across the sea . The sun was pushing its way over the edge of the world.

Over the first rocks, along to the point. Tim glanced back. The beach was still empty. The sun sailed higher in the sky.

He could see the cave now, even darker in the morning light. The sand turned silver then dark gold as the water flowed away from it. He had to force himself to go closer. Why was it so much more mysterious now ? But it would be silly to go back now after so much trouble. He needn’t go in all the way …

    A. had to leave the biscuits on the table

    D. could only find some biscuits in the kitchen

    A. The height of the first rocks.

    B. The ups and downs of the waves.

    C. The change in the position of the sun.

D. The vast stretch of the sunlit beach.

3.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the story?

    A. The sea looked like a piece of gold.

    B. Seabirds flew away when Tim arrived.

    C. Tim was the only person on the beach.

    D. The sky got dark as Tim reached the cave.

4.In the story , Tim’s mood changed from_______..

    A. loneliness to craziness          B. anxiousness to excitement
