Paul had just left college and was offered an interview for a position in a company in New York. As he needed to move from Texas to New York if he got the job, he wanted to talk about the decision with someone before accepting it. But his parents had died. On October 31st, 2009, Chinese famous scientist Qian Xuesen, died in Beijing when he was 98 years old. He is famous as “the country’s father of space technology and king of rocketry”.
Qian was born in 1911 in Hangzhou. He left for the United States after winning a schol­arship to graduate school in 1936. He studied at the Massachusetts Institute{學院) of Technology and later at the California Institute of Technology.
Qian began his career in the US and was regarded as one of the brightest minds in the new field of aeronautics{航空學) before returning to China in 1955.
After he returned, Qian set up the first missile (導彈) and rocket research institute of China. The institute later helped start Chinese space program. He led the development of China's first nuclear-armed ballistic missile and worked on its first satellite.

Many textbooks are not written in the kind of English that we speak every day. In fact, sometimes the reading is so difficult that it almost seems like a foreign language. In a way, it is—the language of science. ² 2. When a sentence doesn’t make sense, go back and read it again more slowly.
² 3. Look for any word you don’t know in the sentence. Try to understand their meanings using word parts and context clues(上下文線索). If necessary, look them up in the dictionary.
² 4. Look at the next few sentences to see if they explain more about the sentence you are working on. Do not read very much farther ahead until you understand what is being said.
² 5. Finally, read the sentence again. Try to put it into simpler words.
² 6. Read through the passage once. Try to understand all the hard parts well. Then read the whole passage once more at a usual speed. This helps you to put all ides together.
The stops sound a lot harder than they are. It is really just the normal way good readers understand anything that is difficult to read. After you have done the best you can this way, you should always feel free to ask for help from your teacher, if you have one.

Earthquakes happen without warning(前兆)．They can happen any time of a day，at any point during the year．But don’t worry because most are so weak that they cannot be felt． Only a few big ones hurt people． However，it’s important to know what to do when an earthquake is happening．
Do NOT go outside．You could get injured from falling glass or parts of buildings．If you are outside，stay away from buildings and power lines (輸電線)．

If you are driving when an earthquake happens，stop the car if it’s safe．Stay inside your car until the earthquake stops，and don’t drive near bridges． Try not to stop by power lines or trees．These could fall and hurt you．
