The train shook back and forth, its wheels making a loud noise. Outside the windows the freezing cold of winter ruled. The train was filled with cold, tired passengers.

Suddenly a little boy   35   his way through the grown-up’s legs and sat down by the window. He was all alone among the unfriendly grown-ups. What a brave child, I thought. His father   36  to stay by the door behind us. The train began to move slowly into a tunnel (隧道). Then something very   37   happened suddenly. The serious little boy slid (滑) down from the seat and leaned (斜靠) his hand on my knee. For a moment, I thought that he wanted to   38   me and returned to his father, so I helped him to stand up. But instead he leaned forward and held his head   39  towards mine. He wanted to say something to me, I thought. I lowered my head to receive the   40  . Wrong again! What I received was a loud kiss on the face.

The boy quietly returned to his seat, leaned back and continued looking out of the window. I was so surprised. What just happened? A child kissed an  41   grown-up on the train. How could anybody want to kiss such a man that had so much beard (胡子)? Nervous and a little surprised, we smiled at the father.  42   he saw our questioning looks as he got ready for his stop, he offered a clue (some information).

“He’s so happy to be alive,” the father said, “He has been very sick.” Father and son   43   into the crowd moving toward the exit. Then doors closed and the train went on. On my face I could still   44   the child’s kiss ― a kiss that has started some soul-search (深思) inside me. How many grown-ups go around kissing each other   45   the joy of being alive? How many even give much thought to the special right of  46  ?

The little kisser has taught us a sweet but serious lesson―You don’t let yourself die before your heart stops!

What are emotions? As far as we know, human beings have always had emotions. Poets write about them, singers sing about them, and lovers and friends talk about them. We know that we can ‘control’ emotions, ‘express’ emotions and ‘feel’ emotions. Is it possible that we can smell emotions? Are we able, like some animals, to smell fear?

Sometimes you can see what emotions a person is feeling. When people are happy, they smile; when they are sad, they might cry; when they are angry, their faces might turn red; when they are feeling shy, they might sweat(出汗). These are all physical reactions(反應), so can we say that emotions are physical reactions to something in our lives?

The problem is that emotions don’t always include physical reactions that we can see. Some people are good at hiding their emotions, and different people can have different physical reactions to the same emotion. Some people’s faces, for example, go white when they are angry and some people’s faces turn red. Some people go quiet when they are angry and some people shout.

Sometimes there is a physical reaction that we can’t see. For example, a person might be nervous and feel sick inside, but other people might not be able to see that. We might be able to see or smell emotions, but we can’t touch them. Can we describe them? In one way we can describe emotions. Everybody has some idea what ‘happy’ and ‘sad’ mean. But in another way it is difficult to describe emotions. Is the way you ‘love’ your pet, your family, your friend, or your husband and wife the same? I always think it is strange in English that we often write ‘love’ at the bottom of a Christmas card or a letter to a relative we hardly know or hardly ever see. We might write ‘love’ at the bottom of a letter to someone of the opposite sex (性別)who is just a friend, but we wouldn’t write ‘love’ at the bottom of a letter to somebody of the same sex even if we know that friend much better.

Some people say that emotions are just a chemical reaction, but I don’t want to believe that. I don’t know what they are, but life would be boring without them.

According to a survey(調查) by CIF, there’s room for improvement all over Britain.

Cleaning our home, love or hate it, is one job you have to work on. But that is not to say everyone spends the same amount (量) of time or effort on making their places tidy. A new survey by CIF―experts on making cleaning jobs easier ― shows that when it comes to washing windows or cleaning the oven (爐), where you live in the UK may show how much effort you put into the job.

BATHROOM

25% of men have never cleaned the toilet, but those in Wales are the worst. Nearly four in ten Welsh men said they never cleaned anywhere in the house. Hate cleaning the shower head? You are not alone ― a quarter of a million British people say the same. 20% of Scottish people regard window-cleaning as their most hated job.

KITCHEN

36% of people in the southeast say cleaning the cooker is their hated task. 68% of those in the northeast spend more than six hours a week cleaning their homes, especially the kitchen. In sharp contrast (強烈的對比) to that, 49% of Welsh people put their hands up to cleaning for under an hour.

BEDROOM

18% believe cleaning starts here: that’s the percentage of women who clean wearing their dressing gowns (a kind of clothes). 51% of women in the northwest may be staying in bed and giving their husbands a cuddle (擁抱)as a “thank you” for helping them clean. In other places, there are far fewer helpful men.

LIVINGROOM

32% of women in the northeast turn up the CD player to help make the cleaning more fun. Almost six in ten women agree, however, that cleaning is seriously energetic exercise.

★ SHIFT (除掉) THE DIRT WITH CIF ! ★

It’s no secret that the right cleaning products will cut cleaning time and effort in half and no one knows that better than CIF. For all your cleaning needs, here are some of CIF’s top tips:

l         Stop a lot of build-up on your shower head ― give it a quick squirt (噴) with CIF bathroom spray (噴劑) once a week.

l         Stainless steel (不銹鋼) tools seem to need endless cleaning. The CIF Wild Orchid Oxy-Gel lifts dirt easily and leaves the kitchen smelling fresh and clean.

l         Cooking outside? CIF cream will get your barbecue (燒烤) completely clean, ready for those long, lazy summer evenings. Perfect!

New York is one of the most exciting cities in the world. You might want to do some  10  in New York. Fifth Avenue is probably New York’s most 11 shopping street, but if you go, be prepared to “window shop” only. This is shopping for the rich. There are other, less  12 shopping areas nearby, and you’ll soon come across famous stores such as Bloomingdales, Macy’s and FAO Schwartz. And if you bring your Rollerblades (輪滑鞋), you must  13 Central Park. This is a large, open park right in the middle of Manhattan, but if you  14  that people came here to relax, sit 15 for a few minutes and get away from the rush of New York life, then you’d be wrong. Nobody sits in Central Park: they run, jog, and most of them go rollerblading. When you 16 New York, you might be tired, even poor and overweight, but you won’t be bored!

Huihua, a Chinese girl, and Mary, an American student who was studying Chinese in China, were on their way to a bookstore. As they got to the bookstore, they saw a young man walking down the stairs. In his hurry, he missed the last two steps, and fell to the ground. He tried hard to get back to his feet while people around him laughed. Luckily, he seemed to be OK.

Mary was worried. She found Huihua smiling a little and was not comfortable about it. “Tell me, Huihua, how could people laugh when someone fell like that?Do they care at all? Shouldn’t they go up and ask the young man whether he was hurt?

Huihua said, “They knew he wasn’t hurt too much.”

“But I still don’t understand. A fall is a fall. In my culture, people would do anything but laugh!”

Chinese Perspective(觀點)

This is an example in which the Chinese and the westerners explain a smile differently. Very often, the Chinese people would also laugh or make a joke to ease the embarrassment(緩解尷尬) when they are caught in the embarrassing situation. However, if someone gets hurt seriously, it will not be a laughing matter any more. People will help him instead.

North American Perspective

A westerner would explain laughter in such a situation as a sign of either insensitivity(不關心) or, worse, pleasure that the person falling had hurt himself because that person was disliked. A westerner’s reaction would have been to rush over, help the person up, and to ask him, “ Are you okay?” If a westerner fell, he, like a Chinese person, might probably make a joke out of the incident (事件) if he was not hurt. If two close friends are walking together, and one trips but clearly isn’t hurt, a common joke is to say “ Have a nice trip”. However, this joke would be made only between two people who knew each other well.
