On the eleventh day of my thirty-six day tour with Contiki, I spent the entire day in Venice with a group of mates. It was a fantastic day spent exploring the beautiful, finely-aged city of Venice in Italy.

On the way there our tour guide, Double D, explained that the best way to explore Venice is just to wander and get lost. And we spent the day doing just that! Venice is such a wonderful city to wander aimlessly around in. It’s the perfect place to relax and put down your map or guidebook you’ve prepared to protect yourself during the trip! There are no dead-end streets---all alleys(小巷) and walkways lead somewhere. And we found many cool spots by just wandering around the city.

It’s such a magic city to explore by just walking around the city’s many streets and alleys. All the buildings are in such a beautiful state of decay---everything is worn, and shows its age. But it’s the kind of aging that makes you feel that the city is just becoming more and more beautiful.

By the end of a great day with my new friends, we had explored the entire city, had an amazing meal of real Italian pizza in a beautiful square, taken the required and fun Gondola(剛朵拉平底船) ride, bought purses and wallets, and just had an amazing time! I highly recommend taking a day to just explore and get lost in the beauty of Venice!

Women work harder than men at university and get better degrees as a result, according to a study at Brunel University.

The research, which followed 200 students for four years, found that women consistently outperformed men in their studies even though they had started their courses with almost identical A-level grades.

An analysis of the results showed that while 65 percent of female graduates were awarded, only 35 percent of male graduates did as well. Girls are known to outperform boys at school, but this research showed that the trend continued at university.

Fiona Smith who led the research said, “The research shows that the difference has something to do with schools in general.”

“It also shows something about the inequality for working women in terms of pay and promotion. Women work harder at school, harder at university, and do better at both, but they still receive less pay.”

The research found that female students were more faithful, less likely to miss lectures, and more likely to believe that their marks reflected their abilities than male students.Female students were also more 1ikely to ask for and receive support from their professors.

Women were also more likely to choose their universities because they liked the courses offered.

In contrast.men were more likely than women to miss 1ectures due to“other affairs” and“laziness”, and to believe that playing sports was an important part of university life.

Generally, people think that women’s success comes from more emphasis(強調)on coursework? but the research showed that female geographers at Brunel did better in their exams than in their coursework.

Dr Smilh said,"Most women feel that getting good grades is the mose important part of university life. They believe that they need to work harder in order to compete in the male-control led environment they will meet at work. Good grades are viewed as an “insurance policy” for success.Men,on the other hand, prefer going out and playing sports to academic work.”“This research shows how important it is to get all young people working hard and teach thern the value of ligher education.”

Since Father’s Day is approaching, once again I sit and wonder how he is.

During my naughty teen years I always tested my dad, who had little education, with what I had learned at school. I found out that he knew much less than I.

My father also realized that we needed time together to sort things out so he took me to New York City for a weekend of fun. I finally realized that my dad was an amazing man and he was a really great guy to be around! We came home after the weekend with a new appreciation for each other.

It wasn’t until the spring of 1994 that I confirmed in my heart what my head already knew. I was only married in a loveless marriage. How ashamed I was! I had met and married the wrong guy. I never really discussed it with my dad, thinking that maybe he would never understand. One night it became perfectly clear that I could no longer stay in the marriage so I picked up my bags, grabbed my puppy and left. I went and stayed with some friends but knew after a few hours that I had to find somewhere permanent to stay. I drove at night and finally went to a pay phone to call home. I was so scared to admit what was going on and I had a huge sense of failure. When I got the courage to call home, I didn’t realize that my friends had already called my parents moments before. Through my tears I told my dad what had happened and the first thing he said to me was, “You are a good girl and I will be right there to get you.”

The relief and love I felt was overwhelming(無法抗拒的). I knew right then what should have been obvious in all my life: You can always go home, and your parents’ love for you is unconditional.

      C. On Father’s Day                                          D. Parents’ Unconditional Love

Buster Brown was a thief―and a good one, too, he thought. He’d never been caught by the police because he never took chances. He was always prepared for any unforeseen event or emergency.

Confidently, he stood outside the house of his intended victim(受害者)and read the sign on the front gate of the house. “Don’t worry about the dog―be aware of the owner!” it said. Buster smiled and found his way in.

The house looked quite normal outside, but inside it was very exotic with fascinating objects on display. As he began putting them into his bag, a dog came into the room. It stopped when it saw Buster, then wagged its tail madly and went over to him, licking his outstretched hand. “Good boy,” Buster whispered. “What a great guard dog you are?--trying to lick me to death.”

Satisfied he’d made friends with the dog, Buster began to wander round the house, choosing items to put in his bag. His skilled eye picked out only the best antiques(古董): a pair of silver candleholders, a silver tea-and-coffee service, etc.. His new friend, the dog, sat and watched, as if wondering what was happening.

“Well, boy,” Buster whispered finally. “That might do. Any more and I won’t be able to carry it!” He swung the heavy bag onto his shoulder, just as the lights came on, nearly blinding him. He shielded his eyes with his hand.

“You’re a very silly person,” the figure in the doorway said, his voice dry as dust. As the man came closer, Buster could see he was well dressed. His face seemed familiar, but Buster couldn’t quite place where he had seen him before.

“You should have taken more notice of the sign outside,” the man rasped. “I knew about this attempted robbery last week and I also know you will end up behind bars for 20 years. Imagine trying to rob the house of the world’s greatest fortune-teller!”

68. Why was Buster so confident?

Ⅶ.

Dear Ralph.

I’m a middle schoo1 student. I’m writing to tell you my problem which has bothered me for a 1ong time.

It is the relation-ship between my father and me.My father is a company manager. He is strict with me.but he has very little time to talk to me because of his busy work.I lvoe my father.but I’m still a 1itile afraid of him because he loss his temper easily, even though I do quite well in rny studies.Maybe it’s because we have seldom sat down and exchanged our feelings and thoughts.I hope we can know more aboul each other and understand each other better. But I don’t know how to communicate with him.Can you give rne some advice?

Best wishes

Yours,

lihua
