Rubber ducks are being used to help scientists understand global warming and melting glaciers (冰川) . NASA researchers have  21   90 ducks into holes in Greenland's fastest moving glacier, the Jakobshavn Glacier between Greenland and Canada. The  22  have each been marked with the words "science experiment" along with an e-mail address. If they are found scientists will be able to  23  how the water moves through the ice and provide information about the  24  of glaciers. Scientists are still  25  about why glaciers speed up in summer and head towards the sea. One theory is that as the summer sun melts ice on top of the glacier's surface, the water moves to the bottom of the glacier, where it helps to  26  the movement of ice toward the coast. The Jakobshavn Glacier is believed to be the  27  of the iceberg that sank the Titanic in 1912. Robert Jones, the experiment organizer, said none of the ducks had been_ 28   yet. "We haven't heard back but it may take some time until somebody actually finds it and decides to send us a/an __29 _ that they have found it," he said. "These are places that are __30  so there aren't people walking around."

Have you ever regretted doing something you shouldn't have done or something you didn't do which you should have? At one time of another we probably we probably all have. There's no  21    in getting depressed about now-it's no __22__ crying over spilt milk. However, there may be some gain in thinking about exactly what happened and why   23  we might be able to draw some conclusions for the future.

One thing we all do now and again is to lose our  24   with a friend or close relative. The odd thing is that we more often display great   25  towards someone we are fond of than towards    26  .The explanation may be that we see friends and relatives as a kind of safety net, an opportunity to  27   a bit of steam in a safe environment, while the consequences of   28  a stranger could be far more serious.

Being honest is usually thought of as a virtue (美德) and undoubtedly this is the  29  . On the other hand, we have all experienced occasions when we have spoken our minds to someone,  telling them exactly what we feel, arid then have found ourselves filled with feelings of  30  . Perhaps we should have kept our mouths shut?

cave drawings of animals and people are at least 25,000 years old.Making

your mark with pen, ink, and paper is much more  21  , though. The first

pens were probably  22   sticks or bones. But it wasn't until about 700 AD

that a particularly  23  writing tool came to be used. It was such a great

tool, in fact, that it dominated the _ 24 _ word for more than a thousand years

after that: the quill (羽莖) pen.

Our word "pen", in fact, comes from the Latin word "penna", which

means"wing". Feathers from any   25  bird were uses: geese, peacocks, eagles and turkeys. Crow quills were used for very  26  work, such as accounting books.

The best quill pens were, and still are, made from the five largest  27  feathers of domesticated geese. Right-handed people prefer pens made of feathers from a goose's left wing. That way, the natural curve of the feather won't cause it to poke them as they write. Left-handed people prefer  28  feathers.

Why feathers? Didn't they have metal? Actually, pens made of silver, iron and steel were         29   , too. But the ink used at the time contained acid. The ink ate away pens made of the only steel produced at the time. When better steel ― and mass production of steel pen nibs(筆頭) ― was developed in the mid-1800s, steel pens began _ 30 _ quills.

試題詳情

  • It all began five years ago with a blog entry about a banjo.Mena

Trott, 23 of age, had recently  21   as an English major from college

and was living with her husband Ben in San Francisco, passing her time

by keeping a personal  22  diary. It was a blog about her childhood, her

pets and that sort of thing. One day, on a girly whim (少女般的突發奇

想), she wrote that she wanted to buy a banjo but her husband  23  let

her. Mena's friends and family, knowing that "Ben is the sweetest guy in

the world", recognized the  24  . But all sorts of strangers suddenly blogged back angrily, advising her to get a separate bank account, and even to leave her  25   husband. Ms Trott was livid. "Why can't people take a joke, and who are these people anyway?" she wondered.

It was the seed of a profound insight: that the era of   26  media was ending and a new era of "intimate media" had begun. Mr Trott had written some software to make it easier for his wife to  27   her blog, and they realized that other people might find it useful too. It was an instant success upon its  28   onto the Internet in 2001, and the Trotts have since built their company, called Six Apart, into the largest independent  29   of blogging tools. Ms Trott is Six Apart's president and public face, while Mr Trott runs the technical side of things. Now,   30  , Six Apart's products are used by over 30 m bloggers around the world.
