When I come across a good essay in reading newspapers,I am often inclined to cut and keep it.But just as I am about to do so I find the article on the opposite side is as much interesting. It may be a discussion of the way to keep in good health,or advice about how to behave and conduct oneself in society. If I cut the front essay, the opposite one is bound to suffer damage, leaving out half of it or keeping the text without the subject. As a result, the scissors would stay before they start,or halfway done when I find out the regretful consequence that inevitably causes my repentance.

Sometimes two things are to be done at the same time, both deserving your attention. You can only take up one of them, the other has to wait or be given up.But you know the future is unpredictable—the changed situation may not allow you to do what is left behind. Thus you are caught in a fix and feel sad.How come that nice opportunities and brilliant ideas should gather around all at once? It may happen that your life changes dramatically on your preference of one alternative to the other.

In fact that is what life is like:we are often faced with the two opposite aspects of a thing which are both desirable like newspaper cutting. It often occurs that our attention is drawn to one thing only after we are engaged in another. The former may be more important than the latter and give rise to a divided mind.I still remember a philosopher’s remarks:“When one door shuts, another opens in life.”So a casual or passive choice may not be a bad one.

Whatever we do in our lifetime, wherever life’s storm tosses us,there must be something we can achieve, some shore we can land, that opens up new vistas to us.Don’t forget God always keeps an alternative door open for every one. While the front door is closed, there must be another open for you.

When the writer finds a good article in reading newspapers,_________.

A.he is always glad to cut and keep it

B.he is always hesitant to cut and keep it

C.he often has a desire to cut and keep it

D.he often finds it difficult to decide which side to cut and keep

The writer feels regretful because_________.

A.he fails to choose a good essay

B.he fails to cut the two essays on both sides well

C.he finds the essay on the opposite side is better

D.he finds that he just keeps the text without the subject

What’s the meaning of the underlined part in Paragraph 2?

A.You’re trapped in a trouble.

B.You find it difficult to fix something.

C.You are trapped in a situation where you can’t decide which choice is better.

D.You have so many opportunities that you don’t know which to choose.

When I opened my e-mail the other day, a pretty woman named Rachel appeared on my computer screen. She greeted me by name and started talking enthusiastically. Every now and then she stopped to smile at me or blow a kiss. She was reading to me an e-mail from my brother, and a lot of it was about his getting the phone company to give him a high="speed" Internet connection. It was pretty cool.
Rachel was there thanks to a new technology called Facemail. Facemail lets you send an e-mail that gets read to the receiver by an attractive male or female form or by a clown. The software, which is free, can be downloaded at www. Facemail.com.
Facemail faces are lifelike, and they copy emotions based on the ones that you put in your text. For example, type in X, and Rachel blows a kiss.
Life FX, the company that develops the Facemail is sure there are broad business uses. The reason e-business is not popular, the company says, is that buying over the Internet lacks the human touch. But what if you went to the Nike website and Michael Jordan greeted you by name, waited on you and personally closed the sale? And the company is talking with Whirlpool about using the technology in a computer screen on a fridge. Then if Mom can’t be home when the kids get back from school, she can leave a note with voice and image telling them what there is to eat.
Facemail could get hot fast. Personally, I’m a fan. But Facemail should be used with words in an e-mail and add angry emotions when you’ve got a psycho-mail.

Does this situation seem familiar to you? Your English is progressing well, the grammar is now familiar, the reading comprehension is no problem, and you are speaking quite fluently. _ _【小題1】
First of all, remember that you are not alone. Listening is probably the most difficult job for almost all learners of English as a foreign language. The most important thing is to listen as often as possible. _【小題2】  The Internet is really a useful tool for English students. You can download The RealPlayer from RealMedia.com. The RealPlayer allows you to use the Internet like a radio station.
Once you have begun to listen on a regular basis, you might still be frustrated (受阻)by limited understanding. __【小題3】__
Here is some of the advice I give my students:
●Accept the fact that you are not going to understand everything.
●Stay relaxed when you do not understand, and try listening to the material for more times.
● Do not translate everything into your native language.
__【小題4】___ Don’t concentrate on details before you have understood the main ideas.
● Listen to something you enjoy.
I remember the problems I had in understanding spoken German when I first went to Germany. In the beginning, when I didn’t understand a word, I insisted on translating it in my mind. This method usually resulted in confusion.  【小題5】 Firstly, translating creates a barrier between the listener and the speaker. Secondly, most people repeat themselves constantly. By remaining calm, I noticed that even if I didn’t pay much attention I could usually understand what the speaker had said.

A.But you can’t follow a native English speaker at all!
B.What should you do?
C.But listening is a problem for most of the beginners!
D.However, after several weeks, I got used to the new environment in Germany.
E. So, what you need to do is to find listening resources.
F. Then, after the first six months, I discovered two extremely important facts.
G.  Listen for the general idea of the conversation.

閱讀理解。
When I was growing up, I was embarrassed to be seen with my father. He was badly crippled (跛腳),
and when we would walk together, his hand on my arm for balance, people would stare and I would be
ashamed of the unwanted attention. If ever noticed or bothered, he never let on.
It was difficult to walk together-and because of that, we didn't say much as we went along. But as we
started out, he always said, "You set the pace. I will try to follow you."
Our usual walk was to or from the subway, which was how he got to work. He went to work even in
bad weather. He almost never missed a day, and would make it to the office even if others could not. It was
a matter of pride for him.
When snow or ice was on the ground, it was impossible for him to walk, even with help...Such times
my sister or I would pull him through the streets of Brooklyn, N. Y., on a child's sleigh to the subway entrance.
Once there, he would try to grasp handrail until he reached the lower steps that the warmer tunnel air kept
ice free. In Manhattan the subway station was the basement of his office building, and he would not have to
go outside again until we met him in Brooklyn on his way home.
When I think of it now, I am surprised at how much courage it must have taken for a grown man to suffer
from shame and disability. And I am also surprised at how he did it-without bitterness or complaint.
He never talked about himself as an object of pity, nor did he show any envy of the more fortunate or able. What he looked for in others was a "good heart", and if he found one, the owner was good enough for him.
Now that I am older, I believe that is a proper standard by which to judge people, even though I still don't
know exactly what a "good heart" is. But I know the times I don't have one myself.
He has been away for many years now, but I think of him often. I wonder if he sensed my reluctance to
be seen with him during our walks. If he did, I am sorry I never told him how sorry I was, how unworthy I
was, how I regretted it. I think of him when I com- plain about my troubles, when I am envious of another's
good for-tune, when I don't have a "good heart".
1. How did the man treat his father when he was young?
A. He helped his father happily.
B. He never helped his father.
C. He helped his father, but not very happily.
D. He only helped his father take a walk after supper.
2. As a disabled man, his father ____.
A. didn't work very hard
B. didn't go to work from time to time
C. hated those who had good fortune
D. was happy and satisfied, and never lost hope
3.What does the underlined word "reluctance" mean in the article? It means ____.
A. anger
B. sadness
C. happiness
D. unwillingness
4. How did the father get to work usually?
A. By subway.
B. By bus.
C. By wheelchair.
D. By bike.
