LONDON —A British judge on Thursday sentenced a businessman who sold fake (假冒的)bomb detectors (探測器) to 10 years in prison, saying the man hadn’t cared about potentially deadly consequences.

It is believed that James McCormick got about $77. 8 million from the sales of his detectors — which were based on a kind of golf ball finder — to countries including Iraq, Belgium and Saudi Arabia.

McCormick, 57,was convicted (判罪) of cheats last month and sentenced Thursday at the Old Bailey court in London.

“Your cheating conduct in selling a great amount of useless equipment simply for huge profit promoted a false sense of security and in all probability materially contributed to causing death and injury to innocent people,’’ Judge Richard Hone told McCormick. “You have neither regret, nor shame, nor any sense of guilt.”

The detectors, sold for up to $ 42,000 each, were said to be able to find such dangerous objects as bombs under water and from the air. But in fact they “l(fā)acked any grounding in science” and were of no use.

McCormick had told the court that he sold his detectors to the police in Kenya, the prison service in Hong Kong, the army in Egypt and the border control in Thailand.

“I never had any bad results from customers,” he said.

39. Why was McCormick sentenced to prison?

A. He sold bombs.                              B. He caused death of people.

C. He made detectors.                              D. He cheated in business.

40. According to the judge, what McCormick had done ________ .

A. increased the cost of safeguarding

B. lowered people’s guard against danger

C. changed people’s idea of social security

D. caused innocent people to commit crimes

41. Which of the following is true of the detectors?

A. They have not been sold to Africa.

B. They have caused many serious problems.

C. They can find dangerous objects in water.

D. They don't function on the basis of science.

42. It can be inferred from the passage that McCormick _________ .

A. sold the equipment at a low price

B. was well-known in most countries

C. did not think he had committed the crime

D. had not got such huge profit as mentioned in the text

(Para. 1-3)

McCormick, 57,was convicted of cheats last month and sentenced Thursday at the Old Bailey court in London

(Para. 4)

cheating conduct, promoted a false sense of security, contributed to causing death and injury to innocent people

(Para. 5-7)

But in fact they “l(fā)acked any grounding in science” and were of no use, sold…to… , never had any bad results

根據(jù)問題中的關(guān)鍵詞according to the judge定位第四段的第一句:your cheating conduct … promoted a false sense of security and … contributed to causing death and injury to innocent people(你的欺騙行為提高了人們虛假的安全感并助推給無辜百姓帶來死亡和傷害)。

A對應(yīng)文章倒數(shù)第二段的最后一句he sold his detectors to the police in Kenya, the prison service in Hong Kong, the army in Egypt and the border control in Thailand。 B對應(yīng)第一段第一句“the man hadn’t cared about potentially deadly consequences”,法官只說罪犯沒有關(guān)注潛在的致命后果,而不是已經(jīng)導(dǎo)致嚴重的問題。C對應(yīng)第五段的第一句話“were said to be able to find such dangerous objects as bombs under water and from the air”提示,探測儀的功能只是據(jù)說,而不一定真的具備找到水中危險物品的功能。選項D定位第五段的最后一句“in fact they ‘lacked any grounding in science’ and were of no use可知,這種探測儀沒有科學(xué)根據(jù),也毫無用途,和D“沒有科學(xué)根據(jù)的工作原理”相吻合,故最佳答案是D。

C“認為他沒有犯罪”和第七段對應(yīng),其中他所說的“I never had any bad results from customers”和C符合,C是正確答案。

Home to me means a sense of familiarity and nostalgia (懷舊). It's fun to come home. It looks the same. It smells the same. You’ll realize what’s changed is you. Home is where we can remember pain, love, and some other experiences: We parted here; My parents met here; I won three championships here.

If I close my eyes,I can still have a clear picture in mind of my first home. I walk in the door and see a brown sofa surrounding a low glass-top wooden table. To the right of the living room is my first bedroom. It’s empty, but it's where my earliest memories are.

There is the dining room table where I celebrated birthdays, and where I cried on Halloween — when I didn't want to wear the skirt my mother made for me. I always liked standing on that table because it made me feel tall and strong. If I sit at this table, I can see my favorite room in the house, my parents’ room. It is simple: a brown wooden dresser lines the right side of the wall next to a television and a couple of photos of my grandparents on each side. Their bed is my safe zone. I can jump on it anytime — waking up my parents if I am scared or if I have an important announcement that cannot wait until the morning.

I’m lucky because I know my first home still exists. It exists in my mind and heart, on a physical property (住宅)on West 64th street on the western edge of Los Angeles. It is proof I lived, I grew, and I learned.

Sometimes when I feel lost, I lie down and shut my eyes, and I go home. I know it's where I’ll find my family, my dogs, and my belongings. I purposely leave the window open at night because I know I'll be blamed by Mom. But I don’t mind, because I want to hear her say my name, which reminds me I'm home.

43. Why does the author call her parents’ bed her “safe zone” (Paragraph 3)?

A. It is her favorite place to play.

B. Her needs can be satisfied there.

C. Her grandparents' photos are lined on each side.

D. Her parents always play together with her there.

44. What can be learned from the passage?

A. The old furniture is still in the author’s first bedroom.

B. The author can still visit her first physical home in Los Angeles.

C. The author’s favorite room in her first home is the dining room.

D. Many people of the author’s age can still find their first physical homes.

45. Sometimes when she feels lost, the author will _________ .

A. open the window at night

B. lie down in bed to have a dream

C. try to bring back a sense of home

D. go to Los Angeles to visit her mom

46. What is the author’s purpose of writing this passage?

A. To express how much she is attached to her home.

B. To declare how much she loves her first house.

C. To describe the state of her family.

D. To look back on her childhood.

(Para. 1)

Home to me means a sense of familiarity and nostalgia.

(Para. 2-3)

If I close my eyes,I can still have a clear picture in mind of my first home.

the dining room table, a brown wooden dresser, a television and a couple of photos …, their bed

(Para. 4-5)

It exists in my mind and heart.

Sometimes when I feel lost, I lie down and shut my eyes, and I go home.

題干中的safe zone提示定位在第三段的最后一句“I can jump on it anytime — waking up my parents if I am scared or if I have an important announcement that cannot wait until the morning.(如果我害怕或有等不到第二天早晨要宣布的重大通告時,我能隨時跳上去,走向我的父母)。

Sometimes when I feel lost, I lie down and shut my eyes, and I go home(有時當我感到迷茫時,我躺下來閉上眼睛回家)。

Many people who work in London prefer to live outside it, and to go in to their offices or schools every day by train, car or bus, even though this means they have to get up early in the morning and reach home late in the evening.

One advantage of living outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of one’s own.

Then, in the country one can rest from the noise and hurry of the town. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes gardens, one can spend one’s free time digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has the reward of one who has shared the secret of Nature.

Some people, however, take no interest in country things: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance-halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnight’s (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night.

1.Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A.People who like country things prefer to live outside the city.

B.People who work in London prefer to live in the country.

C.Because of certain disadvantages of living outside London, some people who work in London prefer to live inside London.

D.Because of certain advantages of living outside London, many people who work in London prefer to live outside London.

2.One can use the same money for ________ to buy a little house with a garden in the country.

A.getting a small flat with a garden            B.having a small flat with a garden

C.renting a small flat without a garden         D.buying a small flat without a garden

3.When the flowers and vegetables in the garden come up, those _______ have the reward of one who has shared the secret of Nature.

A.who live in the country

B.who have spent time working in the garden

C.who have a garden of their own

D.who have been digging, planting and watering

4.People who think happiness lies in the town would feel that _______ if they had to live it outside London.

A.their life was meaningless                 B.their life was invaluable

C.they didn’t deserve a happy life           D.they were not worthy of their happy life

5.The underlined word “rest” in the last paragraph refers to ________.

A.the rest time                           B.the rest people

C.the rest of the country                   D.the rest of the parks and of the sea

London--A morning train rides away, across the channel. English kids discuss the Liverpool's football team in a Paris pub.

Some Parisians have started to travel to work in London.

In the 19th century, Charles Dickens compared the two cities, London and Paris, in A Tale of Two Cities. These days, it might be A tale of One City.

As there are few jobs at home over recent years, perhaps 250,000 Frenchmen moved across the channel. With an undersea tunnel, they could travel between cities in three hours. The European Union freed them from immigration and customs.

Paris, rich in beauty, is more stylish. But London feels more full of life, and more fun until the pubs shut down.

“For me, the difference is that London is real, alive,” said Trevor Wheeler, a financial expert.

Chantal Jaouen, a professional designer, agrees. “I am French, but I’ll stay in London,” she said.

There is, of course, the other view. Julie Lenoux is a student who moved to London two years ago. “I think people laugh more in Paris,” she said.

“Both cities have changed beyond recognition,” said Larry Collins, an author and sometimes a Londoner. Like most people who know both cities well, he finds the two now fit together comfortably. “I first fell in love with Paris in the 1950s. Things are so much more ordered, and life is better.”

But certainly not cheaper. In some parts of London, rents can be twice those on Avenue Foch in Paris.

Deciding between London and Paris requires a lifestyle choice. Like Daphne Benoit, a French journalism student with perfect English, many young people are happy to be close enough so they don’t have to choose. “I love Paris, my little neighborhood, the way I can walk around a centre, but life is too organized,” she said. “In London, you can be whoever you want. No one cares.”

1.It can be inferred that ___________.

A.Paris and London are the two biggest cities in the world

B.In the 19th century, Dickens told his stories in the two cities

C.London and Paris used to be separated

D.Liverpool is a big city in France

2.According to this passage, which of the following is TRUE?

A.People feel it difficult to find a job in Paris.

B.People can't travel to London without a passport.

C.Living in France is more expensive than in London.

D.People can find any job in London.

3.The underlined phrase in Para9 most probably means “_____________”

A. beyond one’s imagination

B. so much that people don’t know them well again

C. so little that people still know them well

D. to people’s satisfaction

4.What’s the meaning of the last two sentences?

A.People can do everything in London.

B.People will feel lonely in London.

C.People in London enjoy living in different ways.

D.People in London enjoy a lawless life.
