D
The future of agriculture must achieve several goals at the same time.
First, it now appears that we will have to double world food production in the next 40 years due to population growth, increasing meat consumption and pressure from biofuels (生物燃料). We will also have to reduce the environmental impacts from our farming practices, which have caused widespread damage to soils, ecosystems, waters and even the atmosphere. In fact, agriculture’s impacts are as bad as climate change as an environmental concern. Besides, we will have to improve food security for the world’s poor. While the Green Revolution of the 1960s made it possible to feed hundreds of millions more people than in earlier eras, the number of the under-nourished in the world has started to rise again. Finally, we will have to increase the recovering ability of agriculture from shocks. Today, our high-efficiency, globalized world has many benefits, but it is vulnerable (易受傷的) to destruction, whether from droughts, diseases or sudden price rises. We must start building better food systems to better keep us away from future shocks.
Currently, there are two models of agriculture: local and organic agriculture vs. globalized and industrialized agriculture. Each has been strongly supported and severely criticized, but neither of these models, standing alone, can fully meet our needs.
Organic agriculture teaches us important lessons about soils, nutrition and pest management. Unfortunately, organic food provides less than 1% of the world’s calories, mostly to the wealthy. It is hard to imagine organic farming developing to feed 9 billion. Globalized and industrialized agriculture has benefits of high output and low labor demands. Without it, billions of people would have starved. However, it has come with enormous environmental and social costs, which cannot be sustained.
Rather than voting for just one solution, we need a third way to solve the crisis. Let’s take ideas from both sides, creating new, hybrid solutions that increase production, save resources and build a more sustainable agriculture.
There are many promising avenues to pursue. A new “third way” for agriculture is not only possible but also necessary. Our problems are huge, and they will require everyone at the table, working together toward solutions.

Allen : I’ve never been a big fan of the bears , especially the vacation show . On my last trip to Disneyland (1999) we passed it by , because we didn’t want to spend the time on something we didn’t really enjoy. If we’d known it would be closed by our next visit , I’m sure we would have watched it one more time . I was just making the point that it wasn’t until Disney announced the closing that this feeling suddenly sprang (彈跳) up for the Country Bear show at Disneyland .

But I think the idea of keeping some attractions (勝跡) open forever regardless of (不顧及) the number of visitors it gets is a mistake . We all have great memories of the Bears , but clearly very few kids today (or I should say families today ) are making those same memories from this show . That may be a sad fact , but it’s a fact . For whatever reason , the show doesn’t pull in the numbers . Isn’t it right to use the Country Bear space to bring in a more popular attraction so that more kids today can make those magic memories of an attraction THEY like ? Otherwise aren’t we just telling kids today that they “have to” make great memories of the Bears , when it’s obvious that the kids themselves are not enjoying the Bears like we did ?

Roger : I am very disappointed that they have decided to retire the Country Bear Playhouse . I remember going to the show as a child , and still enjoyed it as a teenager ,

and now young adult . It is true that there aren’t a lot of shows left at DL and with this one closing even less . Being at DL does require a lot of walking , and it is nice to have a few attractions that are a place to sit and enjoy a good show . I understand that DL has to develop , but there has to be some history to the Disneyland that Walt Disney first designed . There should be some parts of DL that just never go away , and this is one of them . By the time I have children it looks like there won’t be any attractions that I can say I went to as a child at the rate they are going .

Now the Bears are leaving . What I want to say is: stop trying to compete with everyone ! DL is the best , because of attractions like the Country Bears . If DL insists on destroying all of its magic to make way for the latest , well , then it might as well be just another theme (主題) park .

What news might get people talking about the problem of the Country Bears ?

A.The Country Bear Playhouse will be closed .

B.There will be a new attraction for our guests at Disneyland

C.The number of visitors to the Country Bear Playhouse is falling .

D.The Bears will retire because of old age and can’t give shows any more .

Allen spoke mainly to get his point across that           .

A.the Bears will be missed

B.we should tell kids today that they “have to” make great memories of the Bears

C.the longtime attraction ought to make way for a future attraction

D.people never care about what they have until all is lost

Which is the best choice to complete Roger’s idea : “The Country Bears have been a part of Disneyland for nearly 30 years ,          .”

A.and I feel it is time to give our bears a good rest

B.but anyway , the attraction has lost interest

C.but I know that Disneyland will always be changing , and I accept that

D.and I am sad that the Bears will be leaving

Which of the following is not in the same group as the other three ?

A.an attraction    B.a theme park    C.the Bears D.the latest magic

Where can this passage be found ?

A.In a Web discussion zone (區).

B.In a suggestion book .

C.In a report on the popularity of the Country Bears .

D.In high school students’ compositions

D
The government of Norway is planning to build an unusual storage center on an island in the Arctic Ocean. The place would be large enough to hold about two million seeds. The goal is to present all crops known to scientists. The British magazine New Scientist published details of the plan last month. The structure will be designed to protect the world’s food supply against nuclear war, climate change and other possible threats. It will be built in a mountain on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen. The mountain is less than one thousand kilometers from the North Pole, the northernmost position on earth.
An international group called the Global Crop Diversity Trust is working on the project. The director of the group, Cary Fowler, spoke to New Scientist. He said the project would let the world rebuild agriculture if, in his word, “the worst came to the worst”. Norway is expected to start work next year. The project is expected to cost three million dollars. Workers will drill(鉆孔) deep in the side of a sandstone mountain. Temperatures in the area never rise above 0ºC. The seeds will be protected behind walls a meter thick and high-security door.
The magazine report says the collection will represent the products of ten thousand years of farming. Most of the seeds at first will come from collections at seed banks in Africa, Asia and Latin America. To last a long time, seeds need to be kept in very low temperatures. Workers will not be present all the time. But they plan to replace the air inside the storage space each winter. Winter temperatures on the island are about eighteen degrees below 0ºC. The cold weather would protect the seeds even if the air could not be replaced.
Mr. Fowler says the proposed structure will be the world’s safest gene bank. He says the plant seeds would only be used when all other seeds are gone for some reason. Norway first put forward the idea in the 1980s. But safety concerns delayed the plan. At that time, the Soviet Union was meeting in Rome of the Food and Agriculture Organization.
53.The project is meant to ______.
A.increase the world’s food output in the future
B.carry out some scientific experiments on plant genes
C.build an exhibition centre of the world’s plant seeds
D.protect crop seeds from dying out in case of possible disasters
54.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the above passage?
A.The government of Norway will perform the project alone.
B.Seeds to be collected there were produced ten thousands years ago.
C.Spitsbergen is chosen because it is free of the nuclear war forever.
D.Temperature is a major consideration when choosing the storage place.
55.We can infer from the text that _______.
A.Norway had meant to build the storage centre about 20 years before.
B.The storage center will greatly promote world agriculture
C.People will get newly-developed seeds from the center every year.
D.There haven’t been any seed storage centres in the world before.
56.What is probably the best title of the passage?www.
A.The Best Place to Store Seeds        B.Noah’s Ark(諾亞方舟)of Plant Seeds in Plan
C.Concerns of World Food Supply    D.A New Way to Feed the World

A small group of people around the world have started implanting(移植) microchips to link the body and the computer.

Mr. Donelson and three friends, who had driven 100 miles from their homes in Loekport, New York, to have the implants put in by Dr Jesse Willemaire, whom they had persuaded to do the work, are part of a small group, about 30 people around the world, who have independently put in microchips into their bodies, according to Web-based reports.

At a shop William Donelson was having a four-millimeter-wide needle put into his left hand. “I’m set,” he said with a deep breath. He watched as the needle pierced(刺穿) the fleshy webbing between his thumb and a microchip was set under his skin. At last he would be able to do what he had long imagined; strengthen his body’s powers through technology.

By putting the chip inside—a radio frequency identification device (RFID)—Mr. Donelson would have at his fingertips the same magic that makes safety gates open with a knock of a card, and bridge and tunnel traffic flow smoothly with an E-Zpass. With a wave of his hand he plans to connect with his computer, open doors and unlock his car.

Implanting the chip was relatively simple task but very meaningful to Mr. Doneselson, a 21-year-old computer networking student so interested in the link between technology and the body that he has data-input jacks(數據輸入插空) inside his body. They might lead to an imagined future when people can be connected directly into computers. His new chip is enclosed in a glass container no bigger than a piece of rice and has a small memory where he has stored the words “Technology”.

Some doctors have done the piercing in people’s homes, and others have implanted chips in their offices after patients signed forms showing the fact that long-term studies have not been done on their safety. Piercers treat the implants much like any other medical operation steps, instructing people to keep the site dry, and advising them that swelling(腫) and redness should last a week.

69. With a RFID implanted, which of the following will Mr. Donelson be able to do?

A.Make a safety gate open with a knock of a card.

B.Make bridge and tunnel traffic flow smoothly with an E-Zpass.

C.Open doors and unlock his car with a wave of his hand.

D.Turn his body and brain directly into computers.

70. The underlined word “they” in paragraph 5 refer to “___________”.

       A. glass containers                             B. implanted computer chips

       C. data input jacks                                    D. computer and net working students

71. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

       A. High Tech, Under the Skin                     B. A Needle, So Magic

       C. Donelson, a Powerful Man                     D. Data-input Jacks, Inside the Body

72. We can conclude from the passage that __________________.

A.Mr. Donelson has made a large sum of money by the piercing.

B.the Piercers are people working in the computer field

C.the piercing has no side effect and it will make people intelligent

Dthe long term effects of these implants are not yet known
