At 2 p.m. on December 5, 1945, five Navy aircraft took off in perfect flying weather from a naval air installation in southeastern Florida, on a routine training mission over the Atlantic Ocean. Less than two hours later, the flight commander radioed that he was “completely lost”. Then there was silence. A rescue plane was sent to search for the missing aircraft, and it, too, disappeared. Despite one of history’s most extensive search efforts, involving more than 300 planes and dozens of ships, the Navy found nothing, not even an oil stain floating on the water.
This is just one of the many frightening stories told of “the Bermuda Triangle”, a mysterious area of the Atlantic Ocean roughly stretching southwest from Bermuda to the Florida coast and down to Puerto Rico. During the past 30 years, the triangle has claimed the lives of some 1,000 sailors and pilots.
Stranger yet are the numerous “ghost” ships that have been found floating crewless within the triangle. On one strange occasion in 1881, the cargo ship Ellen Austin discovered a small sailing ship, sails waving uselessly in the wind. The boat was full of wood with no one on deck. The captain of the Ellen Austin installed a new crew to sail it, but two days later, during a rough storm, the two ships temporarily lost sight of each other. When the captain again boarded the boat, he found his crew had disappeared. After a second crew was assigned, the ship was again lost in a fog bank. This time, no trace of the boat — or the crew — was ever found.
Charles Berlitz, a man with an interest in Atlantis, the legendary lost island, puts forward his theory that a giant solar crystal, which once was the power generator for Atlantis, lies on the ocean floor. From time to time, according to his theory, passing ships and planes set off the crystal, which confuses their instruments and engulfs them into the ocean.
Officially, the U.S. Navy does not recognize the triangle as a danger zone and is convinced that “the majority of disappearances in the triangle can be due to the unique features of the area’s environment.” These include the swift Gulf Stream current and the unexplored valleys under water of the Atlantic. Also, the triangle is one of only two places on earth where a compass needle points to true north rather than magnetic north, causing problems in navigation.
However, other scientists argue that beings from outer space have established a highly advanced civilization in the unexplored depths of the Atlantic inside the triangle. There, they believe, most of the missing vessels – and their crews – may still be on display for study by these higher intelligences.

If you live in America in the 21st century you'll probably have to listen to a lot of people tell you how busy they are. It's become the default response when you ask anyone how they are doing:"Busy!""Crazy busy!".It is,pretty obviously,a boast disguised as a complaint. And the common response is a kind of congratulation:"That's a good problem to have,"or"Better than the opposite."

Notice it isn't generally people pulling back-to-back shifts in the ICU or commuting by bus to three minimum-wage jobs who tell you how busy they are. What those people are is not busy but tired.Exhausted!Dead on their feet. It's almost always people whose busyness is purely self-imposed:work and obligations they've taken on voluntarily, classes and activities they've "encouraged" their kids to participate in.They're busy because of their own ambition or drive or anxiety, because they're addicted to busyness and dread that they might have to face in its absence.

Almost everyone I know is busy. They feel anxious and guilty when they aren't either working or doing something to promote their work. It's something they have chosen.Busyness serves as a kind of existential reassurance(令人安心的保證),a measure against emptiness, obviously your life cannot possibly be silly or tiny or meaningless if you are so busy, completely booked,in demand every hour of the day.

Idleness is not just a vacation. It is as necessary to the brain as vitamin D is to the body, and deprived of it we suffer a mental affliction as ugly as rickets. The space and quiet that idleness provides is a necessary condition for standing back from life and seeing it whole, for making unexpected connections and waiting for the wild summer lightning strikes of inspiration."Idle dreaming is often the essence of what we do,"wrote Thomas Pynchon.Archimedes' "Eureka"in the bath, Newton's apple :history is full of stories of inspirations that come in idle moments.

1.When many Americans say"Crazy busy", they mean______.

A.they are really tired of their present situation

B.they are really proud of their present life

C.they are complaining about their current work

D.their life are full of all kinds of problems

2.The writer mentions Archimedes' "Eureka"and Newton's apple to show that________.

A.history is full of interesting stories

B.Archimedes and Newton were very busy, so they made great discoveries

C.people may get inspiration when they are idle

D.inspirations come from hard work

3.The word "its" in the second paragraph refers to_______________________________.

A.ambition          B.anxiety           C.busyness          D.dread

4.From the article,we can infer that ___________________________________.

A.generally people pulling back-to-back shifts in the ICU tell you they are busy

B."Dead on their feet" means "being tired out"

C.all the kids are self-imposed due to the drive and motivation

D.The author seems to agree that idleness is better than busyness

Was Princess Diana murdered? The verdict(判決)is no according to an inquiry(調查)held into the cause of her death over the last six months.

The big question was whether the deaths of Diana and her boyfriend Dodi A1 Fayed in a deadly car crash in 1997 had been accidental, or whether there was some kind of conspiracy(陰謀)to have them killed.

Dodi’s father Mohamed A1 Fayed, owner of London’s world-famous department store Harrods, has insisted for the last decade that the pair were murdered by spies of the British state who did not want them to marry. But his theories now look to have been blown out of the water.  The court found that Princess Diana and her boyfriend were not murdered but killed due to the “gross, carelessness” of her driver and the paparazzi(偷拍的攝影記者). Her driver was drunk at the time of the crash and the paparazzi had been running after their car.

So is this the end of the Diana story? British taxpayers may hope so. The inquiry has cost them about £10m(140m RMB). “Thank God it’s over”, was the headline in The Guardian newspaper. UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown said it was time to “draw a line” under the death of the Princess. But Mohamed AI Fayed has refused to accept the judgment. He says the result will come as a “blow” to millions of his supporters around the world, and has not ruled out starting another investigation.

Whatever happens, next, the special place Princess Diana has in the hearts of people around the world is not likely to be forgotten.

1. According to the text, the inquiry focuses on _______.

A. what caused the deaths of Diana and her boyfriend   B. who were the paparazzi

C. how much British taxpayers paid for the case       D. whether the driver was drunk then.

2. By saying the underlined “his theories now look to have been blown out of the water”, the author means that ________.

A. Mohamed lacks confidence in the case   B. Mohamed feels disappointed at the result

C. Mohamed’s idea seems to be believable  D. Mohamed’s idea possibly proves to be wrong

3. Similar to The Guardian newspaper, UK Prime Minister ________.

A. felt sorry for the deadly car crash       B. questioned the purpose of Dodi’s father

C. stood for the court’s judgment         D. blamed the paparazzi for their bad behavior
