科目:高中英語 來源:2013屆江蘇省灌南高級中學(xué)高三上學(xué)期期中考試英語試卷(帶解析) 題型:閱讀理解

Traffic jam and cities, it seems, go hand in hand. Everyone complains about being stuck in traffic; but, like the weather, no one seems to do anything about it. In particular, traffic engineers, transportation planners, and public officials responsible for transportation systems in large cities are frequently criticized for failing to solve traffic jam.   But is traffic jam a sign of failure? Long queues at restaurants or theater box offices are seen as signs of success. Should transportation systems be viewed any differently? I think we should recognize that traffic jam is an unpreventable by-product of successful cities, and view the “traffic problem” in a different light.
Cities exist because they promote social interactions and economic transactions.Traffic jam occurs where there are lots of people but limited spaces. Culturally and economically successful cities have the worst traffic problems, while decaying cities don’t have much traffic. New York and Los Angeles are America’s most crowded cities. But if you want access to major brokerage houses (經(jīng)紀(jì)行), you will find them easier to reach in crowded New York than in any other large cities. And if your firm needs access to post-production film editors or satellite-guidance engineers, you will reach them more quickly through the crowded freeways of LA than through less crowded roads elsewhere.
Despite traffic jam, a larger number and wider variety of social interactions and economic transactions can be made perfect in large, crowded cities than elsewhere. Seen in this sight, traffic jam is an unfortunate consequence of prosperity, not a cause of economic decline and urban decay.
So while we can consider traffic jam as increasing costs on the areas of big cities, the costs of inaccessibility (交通不便) in uncrowded places are almost certainly greater.
There is no doubt that traffic jam brings the terrible economic and environmental damage in places like Bangkok, Jakarta, and Lagos. But mobility is far higher and traffic jam levels are far lower here in the US, even in our most crowded cities. That’s why, for now, we don’t see people and capital streaming out of San Francisco and Chicago, heading for cities like California, and Illinois.
【小題1】We can conclude from the first paragraph that_______.

A.traffic jam and weather are the two factors preventing the development of the big city
B.traffic jam seems to be very difficult to deal with
C.if traffic engineers try their best, traffic jam can be solved
D.public officials are always criticized for misusing their power
【小題2】According to the passage, what’s the author’s opinion towards traffic jam?
A.Traffic jam is unavoidable in any cities.
B.Traffic jam is both a sign of failure and a sign of success.
C.Traffic jam is one of the consequences of successful cities.
D.Traffic jam is a cause of economic decline.
【小題3】By saying “decaying” (in Para. 4), the writer probably means_______.
A.declining B.developingC.rich and successfulD.strong and healthy
【小題4】According to this article, which statement about “New York” and “Los Angeles” is true?
A.The traffic jam in the two cities has been worsened.
B.New York and Los Angeles are the least successful cities in the US.
C.It is easier to reach major brokerage houses in the two cities than in other cities.
D.Despite the traffic jam in LA, you’ll find a satellite-guidance engineer more quickly there.

科目:高中英語 來源:2010年江西省高一上學(xué)期期中考試英語卷 題型:閱讀理解

For most students, school is over and summer fun is here. Even kids who are going to summer school don't need to be cooped up indoors during these bright sunny days. Why? Thanks to technology, many kids now have the option of attending "virtual" summer schools online.

These "virtual" classes are not new. Many colleges and universities offer online courses where the students never meet; they correspond with their teachers and classmates on the web. Even some traditional schools add to daily classes with internet-based assignments and feedback.

There are a lot of benefits to online schooling, and that's why public schools have started participating in this non-traditional type of education. Instead of students riding the bus, going to class, eating lunch at school, and going home in the early afternoon, they can now log on(登錄)at any time of day or night and learn. This flexible online option requires just as much work and participation as normal summer school. However, the timing is different.

Online summer school is not for all students, just like it isn’t for all adults. The student needs to be an excellent reader in order to obtain as much information as possible from the lectures. In addition, students must understand computers and be self motivated(激發(fā))in order to complete the class successfully.

If the students meet these requirements, then online summer school has many advantages. Written lectures can be read and reread until the student understands them. The students can email each other and the teacher if they need help. Students who participate in online summer school often earn higher grades because the teachers can answer more questions without slowing down the entire class progress. And because of this new technology, summer school students can still go to the beach, travel around the world, and take family vacations!

1.Online schooling has the following advantages and benefits EXCEPT ____.

A.Students needn’t have as much work or participation as in traditional schools.

B.Students don’t have to go to school in crowded buses.

C.Students can have more time to understand the lessons.

D.Teachers and students have more time to arrange their own things flexibly.

2.What does the underlined word “option” probably mean?

A.chance of expressing opinion

B.chance of expressing wishes

C.right of demanding

D.right of choosing

3.Online summer school is not suitable for ____.

A.a(chǎn)dults or children who are too old

B.students who are poor in reading

C.those who don’t master good computer technology

D.students who can’t finish homework on their own

4.Which of the following people is most supposed to choose online schooling?

A.A child in the kindergarten.

B.A primary school student.

C.A government office clerk.

D.A child whose parents are working.

科目:高中英語 來源:2013屆山西省呂梁市高一下學(xué)期期中考試英語試題 題型:閱讀理解

Camping wild is a wonderful way to experience the natural world and, at its best, it makes little environmental influence. But with increasing numbers of people wanting to escape into the wilderness, it is becoming more and more important to camp unobtrusively(不引人注目地)and leave no mark.

Wild camping is not permitted in many places, particularly in crowded lowland Britain. Wherever you are, find out about organizations responsible for managing wild spaces, and contact them to find out their policy on camping and shelter building. For example, it is fine to camp wild in remote parts of Scotland, but in England you must ask the landowner’s permission, except in national parks.

Camping is about having relaxation, sleeping outdoors, experiencing bad weather, and making do without modern conveniences. A busy, fully-equipped campsite(野營地)seems to go against this, so seek out smaller, more remote places with easy access to open spaces and perhaps beaches. Better still, find a campsite with no road access: walking in makes a real adventure.

Finding the right spot to camp is the first step to guaranteeing(保證)a good night’s sleep. Choose a campsite with privacy and minimum influence on others and the environment. Try to use an area where people have obviously camped before rather than creating a new spot. When camping in woodland, avoid standing dead trees, which may fall on a windy night. Avoid animal runs and caves, and possible homes of biting insects. Make sure you have most protection on the windward side. If you make a fire, do so downwind of your shelter. Always consider what influence you might have on the natural world. Avoid damaging plants. A good campsite is found, not made—changing it should be unnecessary.

1. You needn’t ask for permission when camping in______________ .

 A. national parks in England     B. most parts of Scotland

 C. crowded lowland Britain      D. most parts of England

2. The author thinks that a good campsite is one_______________.

A. with easy access            B. used previously

C with modern conveniences     D far away from beaches

3. The last paragraph mainly deals with_____________.

A. protecting animals          B building a campfire

C camping in woodland        D finding a campsite with privacy

4. The passage is mainly about______________.

A the protection of campsites

B the importance of wild camping

C the human influence on campsites

D the dos and don’ts of wild camping
