The First Lesson of the New Term, a TV programme about how to protect oneself in time of emergency, is meant to provide school students with the knowledge on self-protection. It will help students in case of natural disasters such as earthquakes, fires, snowstorms or floods. Many examples show that enough knowledge about self-protection along with enough courage and willpower can help many survive.
The example is from the earthquake in Sichuan Province in May of 2008. While thousands of school kids were killed by collapsed school buildings, all students from a middle school survived even without a single one being hurt. That’s because of their timely and orderly evacuations (撤離), which they had been drilled in every term.
It’s good to see that this program is the most important activity of a national campaign to make students be aware of personal safety. Chinese Education Ministry has called on all schools national-wide to give lessons on self-protection knowledge in time of emergency every term.

An example of survival in the Sichuan earthquake highlights the importance of the knowledge about self-protection, which may help one survive in an emergency. Self-protection education among school students has been paid close attention to.
In my opinion, no lesson is more important than the one on personal safety. Life is fragile but can be strengthened when one is armed with enough knowledge on how to protect oneself from danger.
As middle school students, we should learn some knowledge about safety. Firstly, we should always obey the traffic rules. When we go across the road, we must wait for the green light. When we go to school or go home by bike, we should go along the right side and should not ride at a high speed. Secondly, in order to avoid fire in our dormitory, we should not use any electric device without permission. Thirdly, we should not climb the fence of the school in case we might hurt ourselves.
It is high time that we should be aware of the importance of self-protection. And only with a good sense of self-protection can we live a safe and happy life.

School News: Yesterday, Dec. 14, the grand ceremony: To Build Our School an Eco-school(國際生態學校), was held on the school playground. First, our geography teacher just gave us a very brief introduction about Eco-school, which is one of five environmental education programmes run internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education(FEE). It is the biggest environmental education programme for young children all over the world. It aims to help the school improve the environment, raise their awareness of environment. Being a member of the programme, we students can share on the Internet experience with foreign students, which could provide a bigger stage for us.
After that, the schoolmaster Mr Liu made a speech titled: “To save and treasure our resources, to love and be masters of the school!” He pointed out that we students should bear the responsibity to protect our environment and learn to save.
Finally, on behalf of all the students, Tan Peiying, Chairman of the Students’ Union, made a speech to call on us all to take action now to make our school a green one.
The School is very serious about the programme and well-prepared, one teacher is assigned to be in charge of the programme, and it also hopes to be admitted one of the first eco-schools.

In the following six hours, I caught over 10 fish.
On my way home, I thought what had happened on the bank. I gradually realized that the secret of success was patience.
