THE WAY TO READ FAST
Perhaps you have been told about some habits(習慣) which stop a person reading fast、and have been strongly asked to break those habits which you might have.
Do you still have any of these bad habits7 Check yourself by answering "yes" or "no" to
these questions:
1. Do you move your lips(嘴唇) when reading silently?
2. Do you point to words with your finger as you read?
3. Do you move your head from side to side as you read?
4. Do you read one word at a time?
If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, start at once to break the habit.
If you move your lips, hold your fingers over them, or hold a piece of paper between your lips while you are reading. Then if your lips move, you will know it and can stop them.
If you point to words, hold the two sides of your book, one side with your left hand, the other side with your right hand. Then you will not have a free finger to use in pointing while reading.
If you move your head, place your chin(下巴)in one hand, and hold your head still(不動地,靜止地).
If you read no more than one or two or three words at a time, you need to work very hard in learning to take in more words at each glance(看一眼) as your eyes travel across the lines of words.
【小題1】You may hold your fingers over your lips while reading

A.to hold a piece of paper between them
B.to stop yourself talking to others
C.to tell others to be silent
D.to feel whether y our lips move or not
【小題2】When your eyes travel across the lines of words,
A.you need to read the words out

C.don’t hold your head still
D.don’t do any of the things mentioned(提到)above.

【小題1】D
【小題2】C
【小題3】A

解析試題分析:本文講述了4個影響我們快速閱讀的不好的習慣,以及如何改正這些不好的習慣的方法。
【小題1】D 細節題。根據文章倒數第四段If you move your lips, hold your fingers over them, or hold a piece of paper between your lips while you are reading. Then if your lips move, you will know it and can stop them.說明這樣做是為了辨別你的嘴唇是否在動,故D正確。
【小題2】C 細節題。根據文章最后兩行you need to work very hard in learning to take in more words at each glance(看一眼) as your eyes travel across the lines of words.說明我們可以一眼多看幾個單詞,故C正確。
【小題3】A 推理題。根據第二個問題 2. Do you point to words with your finger as you read?
說明這也是影響我們快速閱讀的一個不好的習慣,故A正確。

Most English people have two or three names, but some Spaniards have a lot more.

A Spaniard and his wife went to a foreign country in their car and drove around in it for several weeks. They always slept in big hotels in towns at night, but then something in their car broke. They took it to a garage, and the men there repaired it, but it took a long time, and the Spaniard and his wife were very late after that.

A. Importance of Learning from Failure

       B. Quality Shared by Most Innovators

       C. Edison’s Innovation

       D. Edison’s Comment on Failure

       E. Contributions Made by Innovators

       F. Successful Innovators

Even Intelligent People Can Fail

_________

The unusual things about the innovators (創新者) who succeeded in making our modern world is how often they failed. Turn on a light, take a photograph, watch TV, search the web, jet across the Pacific Ocean, talk on a cell-phone. The innovators who left us these things had to find the way to success through a maze (錯綜復雜) of wrong turns.

_________

We have just celebrated the 125th anniversary of American innovator Thomas Edison’s success in heating a thin line to white, hot heat for 14 hours in his lab in New Jersey, US. He did that on October 22, 1879, and followed up a month later by keeping a thread of common cardboard alight (點亮著的) in an airless space for 45 hours. Three years later he went on to light up half a square mile of downtown Manhattan, even though only one of the six power plants in his design worked when he turned it on, on September 4, 1882.

________

“Many of life’s failures,” Edison said, “are because that people did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” Before that magical moment in October 1879, Edison had worked out no fewer than 3,000 theories about electric light. But in only two cases did his experiments work.

________

No one likes failure, but the smart innovators learn from it. Mark Gumz, the head of a camera maker, attributes some of the company’s successes in technology to understanding failure. His popular phrase is:“You only fail when you quit.”

_________

Over two centuries, the most common quality of the innovators has been persistence (堅忍不拔). That is another way of saying they had the emotional ability to keep on with what they were doing. Walt Disney, the founder of Disneyland, was so penniless after a series of financial failures that he was left shoeless in his office because he could not afford the $1.50 to get his shoes from the repair shop. Pioneering car maker Henry Ford failed with one company and was forced out of another before he developed the Model T Car.

While all my classmates seen to be crazy about a one-way ticket to Mars(火星), I’d rather say Mars is totally unsuitable for human existence. People won’t have enough food supplies there, and the terrible environment would make it impossible for them to live a long life. Besides, the journey won’t be safe. Can anybody explain to me just why people would go to Mars, never to return?

Steve Minear, UK

Here are the things you can think of: the desire to explore a foreign and unique environment, the excitement of being the first humans to open up a new world, the expectation of fame and glory…For scientists there is another reason. Their observations and research will probably lead to great scientific achievements.

Donal Trollop, Canada

There are already too many people on the Earth. I think that sometime before the end of the century, there will be a human colony(殖民地)on Mars. It will happen when people finally realize that tow-way trips to the red planet Mars are unnecessary. Most of the danger of space Flight is in the launches(發射) and landings. Cutting the trip home would therefore reduce the danger of accidents, save a lot of money, and open the way to building an everlasting human settlement on another world.

Enough supplies can be sent on ahead. And every two years more supplies and more people will needs, and Mars is far more pleasant than the other planets in the outer space.

Paul Davies. USA

1. The main purpose of Steve Minear’s writing is     .

A.to report his classmates’ discussion
