科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2015屆四川成都南片區(qū)六校聯(lián)考高二上學(xué)期期中考試英語(yǔ)試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

The UK has a well-respected higher education system and some of the top universities and research institutions in the world. But to those who are new to it all, sometimes it can be confusing.

October is usually the busiest month in the college calendar. Universities have something called Freshers’ Week for their newcomers. It’s a great opportunity to make new friends, join lots of clubs and settle into university life.

However, having just left the comfort of home and all your friends behind, the prospect (前景) of meeting lots of strangers in big halls can be nerve-wracking (令人焦慮不安的). Where do you start? Who should you make friends with? Which clubs should you join?

Luckily, there will be thousands of others in the same boat as you worrying about starting their university social life on the right foot. So just take it all in slowly. Don’t rush into anything that you’ll regret for the next three years.

Here are some top advice from past students on how to survive Freshers’ Week:

● Learn rules. Make sure you know British social etiquette (禮節(jié)). Have a few wine glasses and snacks handy for your housemates and friends.

● Be kind. Sometimes cups of tea or even slices of toast can give you a head start in making friends.

● Be sociable. The more active you are, the more likely you’ll be to meet new people than if you’re someone who never leaves his room.

● Bring a doorstop. Keep your door open when you’re in and that sends positive messages to your neighbors that you’re friendly.

So with a bit of clever planning and effort, Freshers’ Week can give you a great start to your university life and soon you’ll be passing on your experience to next year’s freshers.

Kelly Reeves was getting ready for a trip when her phone slipped into a sink full of water. Panic moment! She quickly picked up the wet phone and tried to turn it on, but nothing worked. Her first reaction? She got dressed, drove to the nearest store, and bought a new mobile at full price.

A new study finds that fear of losing your phone is a common illness. About 66 percent of those surveyed suffer from nomophobia or “no mobile phone phobia”. Interestingly, more women worry about losing their phone than men.

Fortunately, there’s a solution.

The first step is to figure out if you have nomophobia. Checking your phone too often is one thing, but the true sign of a problem is that you can’t conduct business or go about your routine when the fear becomes so severe.

Do you go to unusual lengths to make sure you have your phone? That’s another sign of a problem. If you find you check your phone plenty of times per hour, or a total of an hour per day, there may be a problem.

Some of the treatments are similar to those for treating anxiety attacks: leaving the phone behind and not checking e-mail or text messages, and then learning to tolerate the after anxiety. Even if this leads to a high level of worry and stress, the solution is to push through the fear and learn to deal with not having your phone.

Of course, there are also technological alternatives. Luis Levy, a co-founder at Novy PR, says he uses an application called Cerberus that can automatically track the location of his phone. To find it, he can just go to a website and see the phone’s location.

He also insures his phone through a service called Asurion. The company’s description of its product reads like a prescription for anxiety:“60 million phones are lost, stolen or damaged each year. You’ll have complete peace of mind knowing that your phone is protected and you can quickly reconnect with family, friends and work, as soon as the very next day!”

1.Why does the author mention Kelly’s experience in the first paragraph?

A. To introduce the topic for discussion.

B. To inform us that mobile phones are useful.

C. To warn us that we should be careful.

D. To tell us we should get phones ready for a trip.

2.The underlined word “nomophobia” in Paragraph 2 means “     ” .

A. habits of using mobile phones

B. fear of losing mobile phones

C. eagerness for new mobile phones

D. independence of mobile phones

3. Which of the following is a way to treat nomophobia?

A. Avoiding using a phone for some time

B. Learning more about modern technology

C. Protecting one’s phone against any damage

D. Not using a mobile phone in one’s daily work

4.What is the passage mainly about?

A. Attitude toward mobile phones

B. New mobile phone technology

C. Disadvantages of mobile phones

D. Solutions to nomophobia

How far would you be willing to go to satisfy your need to know? Far enough to find out your possibility of dying from a terrible disease? These days that’s more than an academic question, as Tracy Smith reports in our Cover Story.

There are now more than a thousand genetic tests, for everything from baldness to breast cancer, and the list is growing. Question is, do you really want to know what might eventually kill you? For instance, Nobel Prize-winning scientist James Watson, one of the first people to map their entire genetic makeup, is said to have asked not to be told if he were at a higher risk for Alzheimer’(老年癡呆癥).

“If I tell you that you have an increased risk of getting a terrible disease, that could weigh on your mind and make you anxious, through which you see the rest of your life as you wait for that disease to hit you. It could really mess you up.” Said Dr. Robert Green, a Harvard geneticist.

“Every ache and pain,” Smith suggested, “could be understood as the beginning of the end.” “That ’s right. If you ever worried you were at risk for Alzheimer’s disease, then every time you can’t find your car in the parking lot, you think the disease has started.”

Dr. Green has been thinking about this issue for years. He led a study of people who wanted to know if they were at a higher genetic risk for Alzheimer’s. It was thought that people who got bad news would, for lack of a better medical term, freak out. But Green and his team found that there was “no significant difference” between how people handled good news and possibly the worst news of their lives. In fact, most people think they can handle it. People who ask for the information usually can handle the information, good or bad, said Green.

1.Which of the following is true about James Watson?

A.He doesn’t want to know his chance of getting a disease.

B.He is strongly in favor of the present genetic tests.

C.He believes genetic mapping can help cure any disease.

D.He is more likely to suffer from Alzheimer’s disease.

2.The first paragraph is meant to__________.

A.a(chǎn)sk some questions                      B.satisfy readers’ curiosity

C.introduce the topic                      D.describe an academic fact

3.According to Paragraphs 3 and 4, if a person is at a higher genetic risk, it is__________.

A.necessary to remove his anxiety            B.impossible to hide his disease

C.better to inform him immediately           D.a(chǎn)dvisable not to let him know

4.The underlined part “freak out” in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to“_________”.

A.leave off          B.break down        C.drop out          D.turn away

5.The study led by Dr. Green indicates that people__________.

A.can accept some bad news                B.tend to find out the truth

C.prefer to hear good news                 D.have the right to be informed

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2014屆吉林省高二上學(xué)期期末考試英語(yǔ)試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

London, Reuters--What could annoy teenagers enough to make them stop hanging out with friends and go home?

No, it's not a visit from their mothers, and not a threat to take away their cellphones or pocket money.

It's high-frequency noise. The UK police recently agreed to use a device (裝置) called the Sonic Teenager Deterrent. It sends out a sound that makes teenagers become so impatient and angry that they have to cover their ears tightly and walk away.

The sound is at extreme high-pitch that can be heard by those under 20. The body's natural ability to detect some wave bands decreases almost entirely after 20, so few adults can hear the sounds. The black-box device, nicknamed the Mosquito because of its sound, can be fixed to the outside walls of shops, offices and homes. It sounds to youngsters like a crazy insect or a badly played violin. But it causes no physical damage.

A number of police forces and councils have given permission to use the system and want to install (安裝) it at trouble spots.

Staffordshire Police Inspector Amanda Davies, who has given the device to shopkeepers in the Moorlands area, said," It is controlled by the shopkeepers--if they can see through their window that there is a problem, they turn the device on for a while until the group has run away."

1.The device can be used to _______.

A.threaten teenagers in public

B.drive away trouble-makers under 20

C.help mothers control their teenage children

D.help the police control shopkeepers

2.From the passage we can know that _______.

A.young people often suffer from pains in ears

B.shopkeepers are troubled by noisy insects

C.high-frequency noise is beyond the listening ability of people over 20

D.the police invented a new device to deal with teenagers

3.The purpose of the writer to write the passage is ______.

A.to advertise a new hi-tech device

B.to tell the reader a piece of news

C.to sell the device to shopkeepers

D.to inform the public as the spokesman of the police

4.Who will welcome the device most?

A.Shopkeepers.      B.The police.         C.Young people.      D.The producer.
