第二部分閱讀理解(共20小題,每小題2分,滿分40分)
A
It was graduation day at Etihad Training Academy, where the national airline of the United Arab Emirates holds a seven-week training course for new flight attendants.
Despite her obvious pride, Ms. Fathi, a 22-year-old from Egypt, was amazed to find herself here. “I never in my life thought I’d work abroad,” said Ms. Fathi, who was a university student in Cairo when she began noticing newspaper advertisements employing young Egyptians to work at airlines based in the Persian Gulf.
A decade ago, unmarried Arab women like Ms. Fathi, working outside their home countries, were rare. But just as young men from poor Arab nations poured into the oil-rich Persian Gulf states for jobs, more young women are doing so.
Flight attendants have become the public face of the new mobility for some young Arab women, just as they were the face of new freedoms for women in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s. They have become a subject of social anxiety and fascination in much the same way.
For many families, allowing a daughter to work may call her virtue into question. Yet this culture is changing, said Musa Shteiwi, a sociologist at Jordan University in Amman. “We’re noticing more and more single women going to the gulf these days,” he said. “It’s still not exactly common, but over the last four or five years it’s become quite an observable phenomenon.”
Many of the young Arab women working in the Persian Gulf take delight in their status as pioneers, role models for their friends and younger female relatives. Young women brought up in a culture that highly values community, have learned to see themselves as individuals. The experience of living independently and working hard for high salaries has forever changed their beliefs about themselves, though it can also lead to a painful sense of separation from their home countries and their families.
—From New York Times (December 22, 2008)

Saving the Planet with Earth-Friendly Bamboo Products
Jackie Heinricher’s love affair with bamboo started in her backyard. “As a child, I remember playing among the golden bamboo my dad had planted, and when there was a slight wind, the bamboos sounded really musical.”
A fisheries biologist, Heinricher, 47, planned to work in the salmon industry in Seattle, where she lived with her husband, Guy Thornburgh, but she found it too competitive. Then her garden gave her the idea for a business: She’d planted 20 bamboo forests on their seven-acre farm.
Heinricher started Boo-Shoot Gardens in 1998. She realized early on what is just now beginning to be known to the rest of the world. It can be used to make fishing poles, skateboards, buildings, furniture, floors, and even clothing. An added bonus: Bamboo absorbs four times as much carbon dioxide as a group of hardwood trees and releases 35 percent more oxygen.
First she had to find a way to mass-produce the plants—a tough task, since bamboo flowers create seed only once every 50 to 100 years. And dividing a bamboo plant frequently kills it.
Heinricher appealed to Randy Burr, a tissue culture expert, to help her. “People kept telling us we’d never figure it out,” says Heinricher. “Others had worked on it for 27 years! I believed in what we were doing, though, so I just kept going.”
She was right to feel a sense of urgency. Bamboo forests are being rapidly used up, and a United Nations report showed that even though bamboo is highly renewable, as many as half of the world’s species are threatened with dying out. Heinricher knew that bamboo could make a significant impact on carbon emissions (排放) and world economies, but only if huge numbers could be produced. And that’s just what she and Burr figured out after nine years of experiments—a way to grow millions of plants. By placing cuttings in test tubes with salts, vitamins, plant hormones, and seaweed gel, they got the plants to grow and then raised them in soil in greenhouses.
Not long after it, Burr’s lab hit financial difficulties. Heinricher had no experience running a tissue culture operation, but she wasn’t prepared to quit. So she bought the lab.
Today Heinricher heads up a profitable multimillion-dollar company, working on species from all over the world and selling them to wholesalers. “If you want to farm bamboo, it’s hard to do without the young plants, and that’s what we have,” she says proudly.
56. What was the main problem with planting bamboo widely?
A. They didn’t have enough young bamboo.      B. They were short of money and experience.
C. They didn’t have a big enough farm to do it.  D. They were not understood by other people.
57. What does Heinricher think of bamboo?
A. Renewable and acceptable                             B. Productive and flexible.
C. Useful and earth-friendly.                                 D. Strong and profitable.
58. The underlined word “renewable” in Paragraph 6 probably means “________”.
A. able to be replaced naturally                B. able to be raised difficultly
C. able to be shaped easily                    D. able to be recycled conveniently
59. What do you learn from the passage?
A. Heinricher’s love for bamboo led to her experiments in the lab.
B. Heinricher’s determination helped her to succeed in her work.
C. Heinricher struggled to prevent bamboo from disappearing.
D. Heinricher finally succeeded in realizing her childhood dream.

第一節(jié),閱讀下面短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項,并在答題卡上將該項涂黑。

Bollworms are a traditional threat to cotton crops.Young ones feed on the boll, the part of the cotton plant that contains the seeds.

A bacterium known as Bt is able to kill bollworms and some other pests.Bt is the short form for Bacillus thuringiensis. It was discovered in the early twentieth century.Farmers began using Bt as a natural pesticide(殺蟲劑).

Then,in the 1990s,researchers found a way to grow cotton plants that contain a Bt gene. The genetically improved cotton plant produces liquid that kills bollworms.Farmers around the world are now growing an estimated fourteen million hectares of Bt cotton.

Cotton bollworms also attack other crops. But scientists in China recently reported that Bt cotton may help prevent bollworm in other crops growing nearby.

The study involved crops grown in six provinces of northern China between 1992 and 2008.The study area contained three million hectares of cotton and twenty-two million hectares of corn, peanuts, soybeans and vegetables.

The researchers say the study suggested that Bt cotton not only controls bollworm on the transgenic cotton, but also may reduce its existence on other crops. And that reduction, they say,may decrease the need for insecticide use in general.

But the researchers also pointed out concerns. They say bollworms could develop resistance to the cotton plants designed to resist them. And they noted that insects called mirids have become “key pests” of cotton in China. They said this is because of a decrease in pesticide use made possible by Bt cotton.

The researchers say they do not believe that Bt cotton alone can solve all insect problems.Instead, they say farmers in China should consider it just one part of pest management systems.

1.What is Bt in this passage?

A.It's a kind of hi-tech invention.                   B.It's a natural bacterium.

C.It's a kind of pest.                        D.It's a man-made pesticide.

B.it does good to other crops growing around

C.it reduces the use of insecticide

D.it helps to develop new insects

3.The underlined word “ones” in the first paragraph refers to ________.

A.bollworms          B.cotton crops         C.cotton seeds        D.pests

4.From the passage,we can infer ________.

A.farmers around the world are now growing a large area of Bt cotton

B.researchers are probably now searching for new ways to solve other cotton problems C.bollworms could not exist in Bt cotton any longer

D.Chinese scientists found the way to grow Bt cotton

Smoking is habit that’s closely linked to certain times and places. If you break these links, you can break the habit. The best way of doing this is to avoid the situations where you want a cigarette. If you can’t avoid them, then you will have to fight off the temptation(誘惑). Sit down and think about when and where you usually have a cigarette. For example, do you always have one after breakfast? After other meals? In breaks at work? When you are watching television? With friends in the pub? Once you stop smoking, these times and places are going to be the danger spots. So work out how you are going to deal with them.

It will also help if you can make new habits to break the old one of smoking. So plan some new activities to replace smoking-things to draw away your attention, things to do with your hands, and different ways to deal with tensions.

Some people find it helps if they cut down on cigarettes before they actually give up. It’s one way of preparing for the day you stop for good.
