Confucius (551BC～479BC), a Chinese philosopher，one of the most influential men in the history of China. Confucius was born in a noble family in the state of Lu. However，his parents were poor. His father died when Confucius was only three years old. In 527 BC he began his life as a teacher，usually traveling about and teaching the followers that were around him. Confucius worked as an official of the state of Lu. However，he soon left office to travel and teach. In 484 BC he returned to Lu，where he lived until his death.
Living in the turbulent(動蕩的)period，Confucius believed that people must go back to the principles of the ancient wise men. He therefore lectured to his pupils on the classics and taught them how to behave properly in society. Confucius did not write down the principles of his philosophy. The Analects (《論語》)，a work written by some of his followers，is considered the most faithful source of information about his life and teachings.
The teachings of Confucius were practical and moral，rather than religious. He said that man's behavior should be based on five virtues：kindness, uprightness(義)，decorum(禮)，wisdom and faithfulness(信)．He asked everyone to fulfill their duties carefully toward the state. In the centuries after his death，his teachings，known as Confucianism，had a more powerful influence on the Chinese nation.

For many of us, cartoon strips are simply one of our pastimes. The popular Japanese manga(漫畫) provides us with an escape from reality into a world of fantasy, adventure and romance.With much less text and pictures running for pages, it fits perfectly into today’s fast, throwing away city lifestyle.

Soon after Charlie Chan, “Long time no see” became a popular phrase in the real world with thanks to the popularity of these movies.
Some scholars refer to America as a huge pot of stew. All kinds of culture are mixed in the stew together, and they change the color and taste of each other. American Chinese, though a minority ethnic(少數民族的成員) group in the United States, is also contributing some changes to the stew! Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed stew.

Zhang hopes the police will find and punish the thief, who can also pocket some cash since the stolen “gold” can go on sale online.
New England’s largest indoor public garden has opened here in a historic park, and officials expect it to become a center for learning about plants as well as a top attraction for visitors.
The glass-walled Roger Williams Park Botanical Center, which opened on March 2, offers a tropical garden, an orchid garden, and a Mediterranean room with a collection of citrus trees. The center also has two classrooms and will offer gardening classes provided by the University of Rhode Island.
Roger Williams Park, named for the city’s 17th-century founder, also has a zoo. The park already attracts more than 2 million visitors a year, and Providence Mayor David Cicilline said that he expects the new center will attract more and more visitors to Providence.
