While it is impossible to live completely free of stress, it is possible to prevent stress as well as reduce its effect when it can't be avoided. The US Department of Health and Human Services offers the following suggestions for ways to deal with stress.

Try physical activity

When you are nervous, angry or upset, try releasing the pressure through exercise or physical activity. Running, walking, playing tennis, or working in your garden are just some of the activities you might try. Physical exercise will relieve your anxiety and worry and help you to relax. Your body and your mind will work together to ease the stress in your life.

Share your stress

It helps to talk to someone about your anxieties and worries. Perhaps a friend, family member, teacher or even your leader can help you a better view of what's troubling you. If you feel your problem is serious, you might seek professional help from a psychologist or a doctor. Knowing when to ask for help is an important step in avoiding serious problems later.

Take care of yourself

You should make every effort to eat well and get enough rest. If you easily get angry and cannot sleep well enough, or if you're not eating properly, it will be more likely that you will fall into stressful situations. If stress repeatedly keeps you from sleeping, you should consult a doctor. Make time for yourself.

Make a list of the things you need to do

Stress can result from disorganization and a feeling that "there's so much to do, and not enough time". Trying to take care of everything at once can be too much for you and as a result, you may not achieve anything. Instead, make a list of everything you have to do, then do one thing at a time, checking off each task as it is completed. Set out to do the most important tasks first.

Go ahead and cry

A good cry can be a healthy way to bring relief to your anxiety. It might even help you avoid a headache or other physical effect of anxiety and stress.

What is most probably the writer's purpose in writing the article?

A. To release his or her working tiredness.

B. To help solve the universal problem of stress.

C. To strengthen his or her anxiety.

D. To have more people cry out.

Physical activity can help people release stress because________.

A. only your body movement can help you relax

B. your mind can work better to free you of anxiety

C. your body and mind can cooperate in releasing stress

D. physical activity doesn't play an important part in reducing nervousness

What is similarity between "Share your stress" and "Go ahead and cry"?

A. They both help you let out your feelings.

B. They both need physical movement.

C. They both require mental relaxation.

D. They can cause a headache.

The underlined sentence is close to the meaning of "________".

A. Strike while the iron is hot

B. More haste, less speed

C. Practice makes perfect

D. Quietness wins time

Fifteen years spent in the field of education has provided me with many treasured moments. One of the most unforgettable   36   when I was teaching second grade 10 years ago.

In May I decided to plan something special for the children; a Mother’s Day tea. We had put our   37   together to come up with ideas of how to   38   our mothers. We practiced singing songs, memorized poems and wrote cards. We decided to hold our tea the Friday before Mother’s Day. I was surprised and   39   to learn that every mother was planning to attend. I   40   invited my own mother.

Finally, the big day arrived. Each child lined up at our classroom door,   41  the arrival of his or her mom.   42   it got closer to starting time, I looked around and my eyes quickly found Jimmy. His mother hadn’t   43   up and he was looking upset.

I took my mother   44   the hand and walked over to Jimmy. “Jimmy,” I said, “I have a bit of problem here and I was   45   if you could keep my mother   46   while I’m busy.”

My mom and Jimmy sat at a table. Jimmy   47   my mom her treats, presented her with the gift I had made, just as we had   48   the day before. Whenever I looked over, my mother and Jimmy were in deep   49  .

Last year, I took a senior class on a field trip, and there was Jimmy, I had the students complete an outline of the day’s   50   and an evaluation of our trip. Then I collected the students’ booklets and checked them to see if   51   was completed. When I came to Jimmy’s   52  , he had written “Remember our Mother’s Day tea we had in second grade, Mrs, Marra? I do! Thanks for all you did for me, and thank your mother, too.”

I told him I really enjoyed what he had written. He looked rather embarrassed and   53   his own thanks and walked away. Suddenly he ran bark and gave me a big hug.

“Thanks again. No one even knew my mother didn’t   54   it.”

I ended my workday with a hug from a teenage boy who    55   stopped hugging teachers years ago.

It takes courage to stand up at work. Now more and more people are standing up when they are working on something important.Standing up is in fashion.Medical researchers have found that people who stand at work tend to be much healthier than those who sit.But I wasn't just looking for better health — standing would also improve how I work and relax my body.

In recent years, many office supply companies have begun to sell adjustable desks. These so-called "sit / stand" models are equipped with an electric motor that lets them shift from chair height to person height at the push of a button.Unfortunately, sit / stand desks tend to be expensive, hard to find and not very easy to test in person.

I discovered that when I worked standing up, my mind was clearer and new ideas kept coming to me.I suspect that this is because when you're standing, you feel a bit unchained from your desk.If I got stuck on a word or sentence as I wrote it, I found myself shaking my arms, bouncing (跳) on my feet or stepping away from the desk for a bit — things I couldn't do in a chair.Often, standing up seemed to relax my mind enough for me to get over creative barriers.

There's another thing about standing for a long time: I tend to get hungrier than I do when I sit on a chair. That feels like confirmation(證實) of the stand-up advocates’ belief that you burn more calories when you stand than when you sit.For this reason alone, I' m hoping that one day mass-market furniture companies can make many low-priced versions of sit / stand desks. We could all work with a bit more standing up.

The author likes standing up while working because __________.

A.he wants to show that he has a lot of courage

B.researchers say standing makes one healthier

C.he intends to catch up the fashion trend

D.he hopes to improve his work and relax himself

It can be inferred from the text that   ________.

       A.a(chǎn)djustable desks are mass-produced now

B.a(chǎn)djustable desks are easy to operate

C.cheaper adjustable desks will soon be available

D.a(chǎn)djustable desks can be tried out easily

What is the main idea of the text?

A.Standing up at work is a better choice.

B.Standing up at work takes courage.

C.Standing up at work burns more calories.

D.Standing up at work will replace traditional sitting.

At the age of sixteen, I joined a volunteer group with my dad. I went on my first volunteer project in West Virginia. On the night we arrived, we discovered that “our family” was living in a trailer(拖車) that was in poor condition. A crew had been working on it for two weeks, but every time they finished one problem, another surfaced.

We decided the only reasonable solution was to build a new house – something unusual but necessary under these circumstances. The family was overjoyed with their new house that was twenty by thirty feet with three bedrooms, a bath and a kitchen.

On Tuesday of that week, while we ate lunch together, I asked the family’s three boys, Josh, Eric and Ryan, "What do you want for your new room?" Expecting toys and other gadgets that children usually ask for, we were surprised when Josh responded, "I just want a bed."

The boys had never slept in a bed! They were accustomed to plastic mats. That night we had a meeting and decided that beds would be the perfect gift. On Thursday night, a few adults in our group drove to the nearest city and bought beds and new bedding.

When we saw the delivery truck coming, we told the family about the surprise. We could hardly contain ourselves. It was like watching excited children on Christmas morning.

That afternoon, as we fitted the frames of the beds tog tether, Eric ran into the house to watch us. Too dirty to enter his room, he observed with wide-eyed enthusiasm from the doorway.

As my father slipped a pillowcase onto one of the pillows, Eric asked, "What is that?"

    "A pillow," she replied.

"What do you do with it?" Eric continued to ask.

"When you go to sleep, you put your head on it,” I answered softly. Tears came to our eyes as she handed Eric the pillow.

"Oh . . . that's soft," he said, hugging it tightly.

Now, when my sister or I start to ask for something that seems urgent, my Dad gently asks, "Do you have a pillow?"

We know exactly what he means.

The writer’s first volunteer project was         .

      A.working on a poor trailer       B.helping a poor family

C.donating beds and bedding      D.dealing with a housing problem

On bearing Josh’s answer, the writer was shocked because         .

A.the family lived in a trailer     B.he expected to get some toys

C.he didn’t know what a bed was      D.the boys had no bed to sleep in

From the passage, we can learn that Eric had never seen       before.

       A.a(chǎn) trailer    B.a(chǎn) truck      C.a(chǎn) pillow    D.a(chǎn) house

By saying “Do you have a pillow?”, the writer’s father means that        .

A.what they want to get may be unnecessary

B.they should not waste money on small things

C.they should do more volunteer work for the poor

D.what he will buy is not what they want but a pillow

I have learned two things from this  51  .Maybe I was a fool for   52  in to my conscience, and being too stupid to appreciate a   53   pizza. But the real lesson is that even if you get away from what you have done, your conscience will  54   up with you.

This reflects the saying, “A coward(懦夫) dies a thousand deaths; a hero dies once.” I was a coward and have felt terrible about that incident at least a thousand times. If I had been a “  55  ” and gone back to pay for the pizza, I would have felt a little uncomfortable about it only once, or maybe twice.

科目:高中英語 來源:2012-2013學年江西南昌10所省高三第二次模擬突破沖刺(七)英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

Dr. Sylvia Earle wants you to stop eating fish. It's not because fish are endangered, though wild fish stocks in many oceans are very low. It's not because they're bad for you, though fish in many areas are exposed to poisonous substances in the water. It’s because they're smart.

"Fish are sensitive, they have personalities," says the marine biologist. For Earle, eating a fish would be like eating a dog or a cat. "I would never eat anyone I know personally."

There's a lot more to fish than meets the eye: they talk to each other, they like to be touched, and they engage in behavior that can seem very human. They can remember things and learn from experience. Earle and a growing number of animal rights activists see these as strong arguments against eating fish altogether.

The activists also point out that fish feel pain and fish suffer horribly on their way from the sea to the supermarket. "While it may seem conspicuous that fish are able to feel pain, like every other animal, some people think of fish as swimming vegetables," says Dr. Lynne Sneddon. "Really, it's kind of a moral question. Is the enjoyment you get from fishing (or eating fish) more important than the pain of the fish?"

Fishermen and (fried) fish lovers are skeptical. "I've never seen a smart fish," says Marie Swaringen as she finishes off a plate of fish at a Seattle seafood restaurant. "If they were very smart, they wouldn't get caught."

"For years, everyone's been telling us to eat fish because it's so good for us," says another diner. "Now I've got to feel guilty while I'm eating my fish? What are they going to think of next? Don't eat salad because cucumbers have feelings?"

A.Fish are sensitive and have personalities

B.He knows fish very well

C.Fish are dangerous to eat because the water is polluted

D.Fish are clever

2.Dr. Lynne Sneddon describes the behavior of eating fish in a(n) _______ tone.

A.opposed          B.optimistic          C.indifferent         D.supportive

3.Which word below can take the place of the underlined word “conspicuous” in Paragraph 4?

A.obvious           B.easy              C.impossible         D.necessary

4.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that _____________ .

A.Human beings should stop eating fish

B.We would feel guilty if we continued eating fish

C.People eat fish because fish are delicious

D.Cucumber is a kind of vegetable or fruit

5.What was the author’s purpose when writing this passage?

A.To advise people to stop eating fish.

B.To introduce a topic of whether people should eat fish.

C.To advise people not to stop eating fish.

D.To tell us that fish will feel pain when caught and transported.
