Many parents have learned the hard way that what sounds like open communication is often the very thing that closes a youngster’s ears and month. One common mistake is The Lecture, the long monologue that often starts with “When I was your age….” Eighteen-year-old Kelly calls lectures “long, one-side discussions in which I don’t say much.”

Kids reflexively(條件反射地) shut down in the face of a lecture. Their eyes glaze over(呆滯), and they don’t register any incoming information. Listen to 13-year-old Sarah describe her least favorite times with her mom and dad. “First, they scream. Then comes the ‘We’re so disappointed’ speech. Then the ‘I never did that to my parents’ lecture begins. After that, even if they realize how ridiculous they sound, they never take it back.”

Lines like “When you have children of your own, you’ll understand” have been seriously said by parents since time immemorial. But many of our expert parents, like Bobby, a registered nurse and mother of three, feel that by falling back on clichés(陳詞濫調) to justify our actions, we weaken our position.

Since kids are creatures of the here and now, the far-off future has no relevance to them. Therefore, good communicators like Bobby suggest, “Give specific reasons for your actions in present language: ‘I’m not letting you go to the party because I don’t think there will be enough adult supervisions(監護).’”

Betty, who lives in Missiouri, uses an indirect approach. “I find that warnings are accepted more readily if I discuss a news article on a subject I am concerned about. My husband and I talk about it while our children absorb the information. Then they never think I’m preaching.”

This really helped when Betty’s kids began driving. Instead of constantly repeating “Don’t drink; don’t speed,” she would talk about articles in the paper and express sympathy for the victims of a car crash. Betty made no special effort to draw her kids into the conversation. She depended on a teen-ager’s strong desire to put in his opinions---especially if he thinks he isn’t being asked for them.

D. Kids don’t like any discussion at all.

3.What does the underlined word in the first paragraph mean?

A. 獨白 B. 對話

Success is so much more than just money or fame.1.If you want to have a successful life, if you want to create a life that makes you feel passionate to be alive, here are the three things you need to focus on.

Believe In Yourself

If you don’t believe in yourself, how do you expect other people to?

Realize You Are Already Successful

Success is all around you and flows through you and the more you can welcome that into your life, the more you will start to feel it.

Being grateful for the tiniest successes in life will also help you to create more and more success. 5.The truth is that you are already successful and once you realize this, there is no stopping what you can do.

A. Know Your Intention.

B. Realize your dream.

C. When you believe in yourself, it fuels your creativity, your ambitions and your motivation to do things.

Tonight, my piano recital(鋼琴演奏會) was the most important thing in my family. My grandparents were coming by plane to hear me play. Even my busy Aunt Dianne, who is on TV every night reading the news, was coming.

But one thing was for sure. I would never win an award for my piano playing. And that’s just because the more I practiced, the more nervous I got. So there I was,on the stage, in my beautiful dress, and I sat down at the piano. But when I started to play,I hit a wrong note. I told myself to start over. But then I hit the wrong note again. It was as if I hadn’t practiced at all.

Finally the disaster was over. I ran off the stage. I couldn’t understand why audience(觀眾) were clapping. But they were. My mom and dad had flowers for me and we were all supposed to go out for a nice dinner, but I couldn’t. I just wanted to go home and cry and never go anywhere again. No one even noticed but me. Just like tonight, no one noticed—just you.” Aunt Dianne was right. I think we are harder on ourselves than anyone else is. Maybe I will leave my room. And maybe I’ll play the piano again.
