Nowadays people are troubled by the violence that spreads throughout the media. Movies, television and
video games are full of gunplay and bloodshed, and one might reasonably ask what's wrong with a, society
that presents videos of violence as entertainment.
Viewing large amounts of violent television and video games may well contribute to violent behavior in
certain individuals. The trouble comes when researchers downplay uncertainties in their studies or overstate
the case for causality (因果關系). Skeptics (懷疑論者) were dismayed several years ago when a group of
societies including, the American Medical Association tried to end the debate by issuing a joint statement,"
At this time, well over l,000 studies... point to a causal connection between media violence and aggressive
behaviors (攻擊性行為) in some children."
Freedom-of-speech advocates accused the societies of appealing to politicians, and even disputed the
number of studies (most were review articles and essays, they said). When Jonathan Freedman, a social
psychologist at the University of Toronto, reviewed the literature, he found only 200 0r so studies of television-
watching and aggression. And when he weeded out "the most doubtful measures of aggression", only 28%
supported a connection.
The critical point here is causality. The alarmists say they have proved that violent media cause aggression.
But the assumptions behind their observations need to be examined. When labeling games as violent or non-
violent, should a hero eating a ghost really be counted as a violent event? And when experimenters record the
time it takes game players to read "aggressive" or "non-aggressive" words from a list, can we be sure what
they are actually measuring? The intention of the new Harvard Center on Media and Child Health to collect and
standardize studies of media violence in order to compare their methodologies, assumptions and conclusions
is an important step in the right direction.
Another appropriate step would be to tone down the criticism until we know more. Several researchers
write, speak and testify quite a lot on the threat posed by violence in the media. That is, of course, their
privilege. But when doing so, they often come out with statements that the matter has now been settled,
drawing criticism from colleagues. In response, the alarmists accuse critics and news reporters of being
deceived by the entertainment industry. Such clashes help neither science nor society.

B. Something has gone wrong with today's society.
C. Many people are fond of gunplay and bloodshed.
D. Showing violence is thought to be entertaining.
2. What is the skeptics' view of media violence?

B. A causal relationship exists between media and real-world violence.
C. Most studies overstate the effect of media violence on the viewers.
D. The influence of media violence on children has been underestimated.
3. The author uses the term "alarmists" to refer to those who _____.
A. use standardized measures in the studies of media violence
B. insist on a direct link between violent media and aggressive behavior
C. initiate the debate over the influence of violence media on reality
D. use appropriate methodology in examining aggressive behavior
4. What does the writer think of the debate concerning the relationship between the media and violence?
A. He more than agrees with the views held by the alarmists.
B. It should come to an end since the matter has now been settled.
C. The past studies in this field have proved to be misleading.
D. More studies should be conducted before conclusions are drawn.

With an obese (very fat) or overweight population of 66% percent of adults, teaching your kids healthy eating habits is one of the most important things you can do for them as a parent.
Most parents and children claim that breakfast is part of their everyday routines. But for many more
than you might think, it's not. Children who eat breakfast have higher math grades, have improved reading scores and basically perform better in school. They also tend to have healthier bodies in general, with
better-controlled weight levels.
When you take them to the grocery store with you, it's doubtless that your children will request the
most sugar-filled, fat-injected products on the shelf. But these are not the ones to have in your home-you should avoid buying them at all. Be sure your kids have healthy snacks.
Yes, kids like white bread. But any kid can get used to the taste of whole grains. It just takes a little
practice. Look for white bread, and add other whole grains into their diet. Start toasting their sandwiches. When it's toasted, it'll be that much harder for them to tell the difference in taste.
It's simple, it's true, and it's something you already know: kids who get plenty of exercise are healthier kids. Set limits on the amount of time your child may spend in front of the television or computer screen.
Sign them up for plenty of sports and outdoor activities. And best of all, get involved in sports and exercise with them.
One of the best things you can do to establish healthy eating habits in your kids is to have them yourself. You can tell your kids every day to eat healthy foods, but if you don't do the same thing yourself, the
lesson will never stick.

Tomatoes are the world's most popular fruit rich in nutrition like Vitamin A, C, fibre and lycopene
(番茄紅素). Researchers have found that consuming lycopene helps in preventing cancer. Tomato
also helps in keeping the skin healthy and young by protecting from harmful rays. Since lycopene is
present in the cellular wall of tomato, it is better to consume cooked tomato to have higher concentration
of lycopene. So tomatoes are a wonderful fruit.
Then how to grow tomatoes? First, there should be regular and even watering in the fields where
tomatoes grow. You can also add fertilizer to have better results. Plant the tomato plants with enough
space(for example 2 to 3 inch space)between each other to lessen spreading of disease and pests and
help the fruits get enough sunlight. Provide support like pole when the plants grow up to prevent from
disease and to increase the crop product.
In order to make your tomatoes grow well, you should take some useful tips. For example, choose
variety based on the season and soil type that you are growing. Planting site should have enough sunlight
to have more fruits. Prune(修剪)the tomato plants if necessary to maintain a manageable size. Check
tomato plants regularly for any kind of pests and diseases.
To people's regret, tomatoes possibly suffer from some diseases during their growth. So you must try
your best to prevent them. Soil should be free from debris(殘骸)of earlier plant remains and should be
treated first before tomato plantation like solarizing(曬) to prevent from pests. It is always better to
choose resistant plant varieties and follow crop rotation(輪作)as far as possible.

No matter what he is doing, every human being gives body heat. The usual problem is how to dispose
of
it. But the designers of the Johnstown campus of the university of Pittsburg set themselves the opposite
problem-how to collect body heat. They have designed a collection system which uses not only body heat
but also the heat given off by such objects as light bulbs and refrigerators as well. The system works so
well that no conventional fuel is needed to make the campus's six buildings comfortable.
Some parts of most modern buildings-theatres and offices as well as classrooms-are more than heated
by people and lights and sometimes must be air-conditioned even in the winter. The technique of saving
and redistributing it is called "heat recovery". A few modern buildings recover heat, but the university's
system is the first to recover heat from some buildings and reuse it in others.
Along the way, Pitt has learned a great deal about some of its heat producers. The harder a student
studies, the more heat his body gives off. Male students emit more heat than female students, and the larger
a student, the more heat he produces. It is tempting to conclude that the hottest prospect for the Johnstown
campus would be a hard-working, overweight male genius
.

3. From the passage, we can infer that _____ would produce the LEAST heat.
A. a large female who does not study hard
B. a thin male who studies hard

No one knows yet the accurate number of lives which have been lost in this terrible fire. But reports
suggest that it is more than one hundred.
A wall of flames fifty feet high and at least one hundred and fifty miles wide is now racing towards
the forests and rich farmlands of southern Victoria. Towns less than one hundred miles from Melbourne
will be in danger unless the wind changes. People are rushing excitedly into the streets. The police have
warned them not to see the fire but many people are doing so.
The cause of the fire is unknown. No rain has fallen in this part of Australia for three months, and the
hot, north-west wind from the great central desert is blowing at more than thirty miles an hour.
The firefighters are travelling to the fire by road, rail and air. But it is not easy to get there. Flames and
fallen trees have cut off or blocked roads and railway lines. The thick smoke often prevents them from
finding the air strips (飛機跑道).
It is said that the fire has brought the greater danger to the country since the Second World War.

A. had just broken out
B. had been put out
C. was spreading violently (猛烈地)

No air means death. Although we can't see it, there is air around us. So air is everything and it gives life
