An 18-year-old high school student who had just learned to swim in the last summer vacation saved the life of a drowning Ohio boy on Friday afternoon.
Tom Erickson was credited with (因......而受贊揚)saving the life of Jason Pryor,10, in Mill Creek (小河) Park. Young Jason Pryor, from Chillicothe, was visiting relatives from Anchor Point when he fell into Mill Creek.
The Pryor boy had no business playing near the edge of the river, but he had no idea of the danger.
The creek, with much more water than usual for the recent spring rains, flowed fast and carried the boy around a bend and out of sight from his parents, who took Jason out there and said they had not even witnessed the incident.
Luckily for Jason, one of the most unselfish students from Brentwood’s Central High School was taking a walk alone through the park.
As soon as he found the boy struggling in the water, Erickson jumped into the creek and managed to pull the drowning boy out of the water. And it was reported that Erickson had never received any life-saving instruction before.
“I wasn’t sure I could do it,” Erickson said. “I didn’t know if I could swim through the river by myself, not to mention getting another person out with me.”
This incident should be a lesson to young children who do not know how to swim. Stay away from dangerous bodies of water.

C
Andreea,18,from Romania, sent a photograph of the view from her window and included a brief apology, “Sorry, this picture is plain and boring. No one would like it.”
At home in New Jersey, US, Coreen Burke,16, clicked on the same image on the internet. She saw a village with its rooftops and walls painted in reds and yellows, a distant chimney(煙囪) giving off smoke. “Isn’t this amazingly different from my country?” She thought to herself.
Burke, a teenager with a skill for computers, saw beauty in that photo. She posted it to her blog, Outside My Window, which features a daily snapshot(快照) of someone’s window view around the world.
The concept is simple: We can all relate to the act of staring through a piece of glass, onto the scene on the other side. “Maybe if we understood the way people from all over the world live,” she explained, “we would all get along better than we have been lately.”
With a click of a mouse, you can see Frederic’s window in the south of France, looking out on sailboats anchored (拋錨) in a peaceful harbor. Or Virginia’s view in Canada, a winter scene with trees laced in white.
Like most high school students, Burke has traveled the world. But she says someday she hopes to collect stamps in her passport, starting with Greece and India. Her recent break was devoted to launching the site with a blogger account and recruiting(招募) contributors from deviant ART, an online art community. She posted the first window view from Switzerland, a sunset photographed by an 18-year-old. Then others came flowing in by email, up to seven a day, from as far as Kazakhstan and Indonesia.
Contributors are marked on maps pinned on her bedroom wall: a blue dot indicates their country and a pink dot shows their city, if they provide it. The most responses have come from Europe – Estonia, Poland, Italy, Germany and Sweden, to name a few. She is crossing her fingers, thinking that she’ll receive a photo from Africa or Antarctica, which are unrepresented so far.
While she’s become a cyber crusader(網絡革新者) for appreciating the beauty outside our own windows, get this: She has no windows in her bedroom. She has a nice skylight(天窗), though.

On November 8,all flags in Finland were flown at half-mast(半旗). People were showing their respect to the victims of a high school tragedy. The day before, an 18-year-old boy opened fire at his high school, killing seven other students and the principal before ending his own life.
The first school shooting in Finland since 1989  stunned the nation where gun crime is rare and people enjoy a high standard of living. While the police are busy searching for the killer's motives, another issue is creating debate in the North European country - the right to carry a gun.
Finland is one of a few developed Western countries that allow private possession of guns. The right to bear arms is deeply rooted in Finnish culture. Anyone older than 15 can buy a gun from certain shops, and gun clubs are popular places to hang out. The high school shooter was a member of the Helsinki Shooting Club, which has 1,500 members.
Descendants (子孫) of hunters, Finns have survived by hunting and fishing for thousands of years. But today hunting is just done for entertainment. And its land, half of which is covered by forest, provides an ideal site for hunting.
In Finland, there are about 56 guns for every 100 people. That figure is higher than any other country in the world except for the United States and Yemen. In comparison with those two nations, however, Finland has largely avoided bloodshed caused by firearms, at least until last week. However, the recent event proved the need for stricter gun laws.
Petri Oinonen, a gun dealer, said the shooting did not surprise him. "It was only a question of when this was going to happen, not if it was going to happen."
61. The underlined word "stunned " in paragraph 2 probably means ______.
A. shocked                B. excited                C. announced              D. stopped
62. Which of the following statements is NOT true about Finland?
A. There was a school shooting in Finland in 1989.
B. Finland has much bloodshed caused by firearms.
C. The ancestors of Finnish people are mainly hunters.
D. Finland has the world's third rate of gun ownership.
63. According to Petri Oinonen, we can learn _______.
A. the school shooting was really an unexpected event to him
B. Finnish people were asking the question when this would happen again
C. a disaster like this was sure to happen because of loose gun laws
D. nobody knew whether this was going to happen again
64. What would be the best title for the text?
A. School shooting: A disaster! B. Finns, think again about gun possession!
C. Finland, a danger to the world! D. Finns, protect yourselves!

An 18-year-old student has won a local election to become mayor of his hometown in the US state of Michigan. Michael Sessions won by the slenderest of margins - just two votes put him ahead of his only rival, the incumbent 51-year-old mayor. Mr. Sessions attributed his electoral success to the votes cast by his parents. He will now have to juggle schedules between attending school and fulfilling his civic duties. He will attend his school classes between 8am to 3pm and carry out his new job as the elected mayor of Hillsdale before dinner at 6pm. He aims to deliver on his campaign pledges of increasing the contingent (小分隊) of full-time fire-fighters from three to four, revitalizing (使恢復元氣) the local economy and enabling townsfolk to air their views and grievances on town life.

Mr. Sessions was too young to enter the election when it was first announced – he turned 18 only in September, which meant he had just four weeks of campaigning. Although he is the youngest elected official in America, he cannot celebrate his success with champagne because he would be arrested for underage drinking. He ran for office with a budget of $700, which he made from his summer job of selling toffee apples. His position is largely ceremonial and he will not get his own office. Instead, he will receive an annual stipend of $3,600 to cover basic expenses. He starts his four-year position on November 21. Mr. Sessions has become an overnight celebrity since his victory and has already done the circuit of television chat show interviews.

1. When did the election probably take place?

A. August.        B. September.         C. October.       D. December.

2. How long will Mr. Sessions be the mayor of Michigan State?

A. One year.           B. Two years.         C. Four years.     D. Not mentioned.

3. Which of the following statements is correct?

Andy Tomas is proof of the typical case that life-changing disaster awaits the drunken driver.

“A lot of teachers say, ‘Don’t drink,’ but I’m not going to say that, because I know that students are going to do it,” Andy says. “I just say, ‘Don’t get in a car.’”

As an 18-year-old, he could be a classmate or a friend, and that familiarity adds to the power of his words. He has spoken to more than 2500 high school students so far, and he has noticed their unusual silence.

One year ago, Andy, having been with friends drinking, lost control of his car and was thrown into trees 20 feet away. He was found covered in blood, with many bones broken. He was diagnosed with a severe brain injury and remained in an unconscious state and on life support for nearly three weeks. His skull was opened to reduce pressure on his brain.

At Children’s Specialized Hospital in New Brunswick, Doctor Erin Leahy initially found Andy unable to move the right side of his body. But by the end of his six-week stay, he was able to walk out of the building. Leahy called that an inspiration and a surprise.

Yet Andy’s recovery is incomplete. Brain and muscular therapy(治療) has helped him regain movement in his right arm, but he still struggles with right hand.

In the process of recovery, Andy has thought deeply about what happened and why, and decided to share his story. Encouraged by his doctor, he began to attending meetings, delivering speeches.

He said he was nervous at first, but has grown used to the spotlight. “I feel like I know how to talk to people.” He said. And his recovery and visible injury help him draw serious attention from students.

Drunk driving, he tells students, is like playing gambles. “You might do it a bunch of times, but something is going to happen.

Now his days are all about the therapy, work and going to the gym. Mentally, he says, “ I’m a lot happier in my life.”

       D. Show readers Andy’s amazing recovery experience.

       B. Because he is just like one of our classmates or friends.

       C. Because doctors and family never gave him up.[

       D. Because his classmates and friends are familiar with him.

3.What does the underlined sentence mean?

       A. Drunk driving will be fined a lot of money eventually.

       B. Drunk driving will eventually have a serious accident.

       C. Drunk driving is as adventurous and thrilled as gamble.

       D. Drunk driving is banned even if you are an experienced driver.

4.What happened to Andy after the accident?

When the shooting of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was complete, it was much more than a movie wrap-up (結束).

Rupert Grint, who played Ron Weasley, told The Sunday Times that he’s happy to have the time for romance now filming is over. Emma Watson, who is Hermione Granger in the movies, said she looked forward to “finally being free, being my own person” – a change signaled by her new haircut.

Daniel Radcliffe, who has been the face of the boy wizard since 2001, said that he “did cry like a little girl” when the last movie finished.

“It’s like the ending of a relationship,” he told The Vancouver Sun. “There’s a sense of, ‘God, what am I going to do now?’” He said he was eager to see “what life holds for him beyond Hogwarts”.

Along with the three actors, Harry Potter fans, now in their late teens, came of age with J.K. Rowling’s characters. For them, the last film isn’t just a goodbye to a decade of magic, but the close of their childhoods.

“We are the Harry Potter generation,” Canadian Andrea Hill, 19, told The Vancouver Sun. “We started in elementary school, reading about a boy our age who was going through the same things we were going through. We grew up, so did he.”

For Emily Chahal, an 18-year-old student, the series has been an inspiring journey. “That first book was what started my love of literature. It was the inspiration for everything – really teaching me to appreciate my friends, and to face difficulties with a sense of courage,” she said. “I have a sense of sadness. The end of the movies is kind of the end of my childhood, too.”

Fortunately, to the delight of die-hard fans, there are many things that keep the boy wizard alive. For example, in June this year, a Harry Potter theme park opened in Florida, US.

Some schools in the US and UK also have Quidditch teams – players ride broomsticks. “We’re not waiting anymore to see what happens to Harry next,” Hill told The Vancouver Sun. She founded a Quidditch club at Carleton University in Canada. “We’re still engaged in that magical world.”
