四、閱讀理解(每小題2分,共30分)
A
You might think that “global warming” means nothing more than a rise in the world’s temperature. But, rising sea levels caused by it have resulted in the first evacuation(撤離) of an island nation—the citizens of Tuvalu will have to have their homeland.
During the 20th century, sea level rose 8-12 inches. As a result, Tuvalu has experienced lowland flooding of salt water which has polluted the country’s drinking water.
Paani Laupepa, a Tuvaluan government official, reported to the Earth Policy Institute that the nation suffered an unusually high number of fierce storms in the past ten years. Many scientists connect higher surface water temperatures resulting from global warming to greater and more damaging storms.
Laupepa expressed dissatisfaction with the United States for refusing to sign the Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement calling for industrialized nations to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions(導致溫室效應的氣體排放), which are a main cause of global warming. “By refusing to sign the agreement, the US has effectively taken away the freedom of future generations of Tuvaluans to live where their forefathers have lived for thousands of years,” Laupepa told the BBC.
Tuvalu has asked Australia and New Zealand to allow the gradual move of its people to both countries.
Tuvalu is not the only country that is vulnerable(易受影響的) to rising sea levels. Maumoon Gayoon, president of the Maldives, told the United Nations that global warming has made his country of 311,000 an “endangered nation”.
56. The text is mainly abou_________ .
A. rapid changes in earth’s temperature
B. bad effects of global warming
C. moving of a country to a new place
D. reasons for lowland flooding
57. According to scientists, the DIRECT cause of more and fiercer storms is________.
A. greenhouse gas emissions in industrialized nations
B. higher surface water temperatures of the sea
C. continuous global warming
D. rising sea levels
58. Laupepa was not satisfied with the United States because it did not_______.
A. agree to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions
B. sign an agreement with Tuvalu
C. allow Tuvaluans to move to the US
D. believe the problems facing Tuvalu were real

Books which give instructions on how to do things are very popular in the United States today. Thousands of these “How to” books are available; in fact, there are about four thousand books with titles that begin with the words “How to”. One book may tell you how to earn more money, another may tell you how to save or spend it, and another may explain how to give your money away.  Many “How to” books give advice on careers (職業). They tell you how to choose a career and how to succeed at it. If you fail, however, you can buy a book called “How to Turn Failure into Success”. If you would like to become very rich, you can buy the book “How to Make a Million”. If you never make any money at all, you may need a book called “How to Live on Nothing?”. One of the most popular types of books is one that helps you with personal problems. If you want to have a better love of life, you can read “How to Succeed at Love Every Minute of Your Life.?”. If you are tired of books on happiness, you may prefer a book called “How to Make Yourself miserable?”.
Many of these books help people use their time better. Some people want books which will give them useful information about sports, hobbies, and travel. Other people use their free time to make repairs and improvements on their homes. They prefer books which give step by step instruction on how to repair things like plumbing (衛生管道工程) and electrical wiring, or on how to redecorate (重新裝飾) or enlarge a house.
Why have “How to” books become so popular? Probably because life has become so complex. Today people have far more free time to use, more choices to make, and more problems to solve. “How to” books help people deal with modern life.
51. These “How to” books are written to______.
A. tell people on how to love their daily life
B. earn money for the companies to survive in the competition
C. give people some good advice on how to do something they want to do
D. give readers who want to know about America a deep impression

A. buy a book on “How to Make a Million?”
B. read a book on how to choose a career and how to succeed at it
C. make better use of his time in his daily life
D. use his free time to look for it

三. 閱讀理解(每小題2分,滿分40分)閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A、B、C、D四個選項中,選出最佳選項,并在答題卡上將該項涂黑。
Ten years ago I used to be very fit (健康的). I rode a bike to work and I got a lot of exercise at weekends. I used to play tennis a lot and go for long walks. In those days I didn’t earn very much. I had a job in an office. It wasn’t a very good job but I had a lot of time to do the things I enjoyed doing.
Then, about eight years ago, I got a much better job. The pay was better, but the hours were a lot longer. I bought a car and drove to work every day. I began to take people out to lunch. And I began to put on weight, too. I stopped playing tennis and going for long walks at weekends because I just didn’t have any time for things like that any more.
There’s a lot of stress (壓力) in my job. Perhaps that’s why I started drinking more than I used to. For example, I used to have only half a glass of whisky when I got home, but then I started filling my glass to the top, and instead of having one glass, I would have several. I started smoking a lot, too. I never used to smoke at all.
Two months ago I had a heart attack. At first I just couldn’t believe it. Luckily it wasn’t very serious. The doctor advised me to stop smoking and to eat less. He also advised me to work less and get more exercise. But I just haven’t any time! My job takes everything out of me!
Sometimes I wonder if I should get another job. Perhaps I could do something like I used to do. But if I do that, I won’t earn as much. I have a family to support. I have to think of them, too. I just don’t know what I should do. What do you think?
56. Compared with ten years ago, what is worse for the author now?
A. His job.   B. His pay.   C. His means of transport.    D. His health.
57. According to the passage, when the author got the better job, which of the following is NOT true?
A. He got higher pay.           B. His working hours weren’t long.

四、閱讀理解(每小題1.5分,滿分30分)

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A、B、C、D四個選項中,選出最佳選項,并在答題卡上將該項涂黑。

The easy way out isn’t always easiest. I learned that lesson when I decided to treat Doug,

my husband of one month, to a special meal. I glanced through my cookbook and chose a menu

which included homemade bread. Knowing making the bread would take time, I started on it as

soon as Doug left for work. As I was not experienced in cooking, I thought if a dozen was good, two dozen would be better, so I doubled everything. As Doug loved oranges, I also opened a can of orange and poured it all into the bowl. Soon there was a sticky dough (面團) covered with ugly yellowish marks. Realizing I had been defeated, I put the dough in the rubbish bin outside so I wouldn’t have to face Doug laughing at my work. I went on preparing the rest of the meal, and, when Doug got home, we sat down to Cornish chicken with rice. He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed disturbed. Twice he got up and went outside, saying he thought he heard a noise. The third time he left, I went to the window to see what he was doing. Looking out, I saw Doug standing about three feet from the rubbish bin, holding the lid up with a stick and looking into the container. When I came out of the house, he dropped the stick again, he held the lid up enough for me to see. I felt cold. But I stepped closer and looked harder. Without doubt it was my work. The hot sun had caused the dough to double in size and the fermenting yeast (酵母) made the surface shake and sigh as though it were breathing. It looked like some unknown being from outer space. I could see why Doug was so shaken. I had to admit what the ‘living thing’ was and why it was there. I don’t know who was more embarrassed (尷尬) by the whole thing --- Doug or me.

    A. The canned orange had gone bad.

B. She didn’t use the right kind of flour.

C. The cookbook was hard to understand.

D. She did not follow the directions closely.

 3. Why did the woman put the dough in the rubbish bin?      _________

    A. She didn’t see the use of keeping it.

B. She meant to joke with her husband.

C. She didn’t want her husband to see it.

   D. She hoped it would soon dry in the sun.
