Many parents don't love to read to their children. But there are so many professionals and PhDs doing
the opposite thing. And they really promote reading to children, which is so good for children.I have found
that this is true with my own children.
I am not sure if it is the book or the fact that you are spending quality time with them, undivided time
that they will remember for their entire life.Reading to children is one of the most bonding experiences you can have.
Children enjoy sitting on your lap while your voice flows over them.As the reader it is fun to watch
their littl e faces as they are moved with the flow of the story. They are laughing one moment and on the
next page the story has moved them to tears. As the storyteller, I am just as moved as they are;I am
caught up in the story as our emotions flow up and down. You can easily lose a whole afternoon in reading.
This is an experience that children then try to pass on to younger children, reading books to them.My
daughter was so into reading that if she couldn't line up some neighbors'children she could be reading her
books to, she would line up her stuffed animals and read to them.Well, she also tried to teach her neighbors and teddy bears math, and "ocean science "as she called it.She would read anything she could to them.
And to my astonishment the neighbors'parents told me they really appreciated the fact that their children
were doing so much better in school.

A. you should place your children on your lap while reading to them
B. children's feelings change while you read books to them
C. it is easy to kill time while you are reading books to children
D. reading to children is one of the most interesting experiences

A. She lined up some neighbors'children and read to them.
B. She lined up her stuffed animals and read to them.

  Updated:2006-04-10 08∶14

WASHINGTON-A screaming intruder(入侵者)made it onto the front lawn of the White House Sunday while President Bush was at home before being caught by Secret Service officers.

MEXICO CITY: A jetliner from the beach resort of Cancun was briefly hijacked as it landed in Mexico City on Wednesday. The hijackers released all passengers shortly before federal police stormed the plane, and the crew emerged unharmed moments later.
Police, who did not fire a single shot, led as many as eight handcuffed men away from the airplane, which was isolated at the end of a runway in an area designed for emergencies. The hijackers’ motive was unclear, though Mexican news media initially identified them as Bolivians demanding to speak with Mexican President Felipe Calderon.
US, French and Mexican citizens were among the 112 passengers and crew on Aeromexico Flight 576, according to a US official who had been briefed on the situation. The official was not authorized to discuss the case and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Mexico’s transportation and communications secretary, Juan Molinar, said there was no bomb on the airplane, although some passengers said one of the hijackers held a package that resembled an explosive device, and a bomb squad (拆彈小組) was later seen near the airplane.
He did not immediately identify the hijackers or speculate on their motive.
“Various people who participated in the act have been detained and we are investigating,”Molinar said.
The attorney general’s office said it was opening an investigation into terrorism and kidnapping but did not specify how many people could be charged.
Mexican news media initially reported the hijackers were Bolivian, but Bolivia’s ambassador to Mexico, Jorge Mancilla, said Mexican authorities had no evidence that was the case. Mancilla said sources told him they could be Colombian or Venezuelan. Several passengers told reporters they did not notice a non-Mexican accent.
Passenger Rocio Garcia told the Televisa network that the pilot made an announcement after landing in Mexico City that the airplane was being hijacked. Passengers said the hijackers never communicated with them directly.
“These were scary moments,”she said.
She said she saw one of the hijackers whom she described as a well-dressed, older man.
“He looked fine, like a normal passenger,”she said.
Passenger Daniel Hernandez said he saw a hijacker carrying a Bible.
51.From the first paragraph we can conclude that _________.
A.the hijackers just wanted to play a trick on the police
B.the hijackers didn’t prepare for their action
C.the hijackers surrendered before the police fired
D.the hijackers lost their way at the last moment
52.From what Juan Molinar said we can learn that _________.
A.police were still trying to identify a possible bomb
B.passengers succeeded in stopping the explosion
C.a frightening bomb was found later on the airplane
D.several Mexicans were involved in the hijacking
53.What may be the first step taken when the hijacked plane landed?
A.They gave a sudden attack at the hijackers.
B.They kept the plane away from other planes.
C.They asked the crew to control the hijackers.
D.They abandoned the plane at the end of the runway.
54.The hijackers, as some passengers described, _________.
A.were good at bargaining with the police
B.were all well-dressed American old men
C.all came from Colombia or Venezuela
D.stayed calm and appeared noble, educated

Ⅳ. 閱讀理解(共20題;每小題2分,滿分40分)

第一節閱讀理解(共15小題;每小題2分,滿分30分)

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給A, B, C和 D項中,選出最佳選項。

In an age when technology moves faster than most can keep up with, a small group of people still remain in the time of old-fashioned letters. Frankly speaking, I was once certain that traditional letters could never be replaced by other means of communication.

But a story about online communication changed my mind.

An old man, who suffered a lot from Parkinson's disease, was not able to talk clearly and could hardly write his name. Living totally alone, he managed to keep in touch with nearly all the members of his family. How did he achieve this? He clicked out words on his computer keyboard.

I, therefore, managed to get an e-mail box as soon as the opportunity came. My life changed. E-mail, and all online communication, is something truly different. It has capabilities that few other products can match.

E-mail is convenient. It takes less time with its fast speed and 24-hour connection. The slow postal service is no match. If you wouldn't want to have a face-to-face talk with your manager, you might talk with him through e-mail even if you are in the same office.

Naming all the good things about online communication is not easy. But wait. E-mail can be inconvenient. It can waste time and energy. Just think what may happen when you take a short vacation and return to find your e-mail box filled with 200 unread messages. You could clearly spend half a day clearing junk ads.

Then, online communication will keep us staying at our computer while it connects us to distant strangers. Once we throw ourselves into the machine, we may forget the human touches we once held so dear. I'm sure there's and always will be a place for the old-fashioned letter, phone call, and face-to-face meeting even in the world of modem communication.

As I listen to the sound of the modem, I was excited at stepping out to the outside world but, at the same time, I sensed a loss of control over something valuable in my personal life.

41. What caused the writer to become interested in e-mail and online communication?

A. The sound of the modem.        B. His own illness.

C. The changing of his life.         D. A sick old man's experience.

42. What is the most probable meaning of the underlined word "junk" in Paragraph 7?

A. Old and useless.                 B. New and useful.

C. Short but valuable.               D. Long but clear.

43. What does the writer think of online communication?

A. It should replace old-fashioned letters completely.

B. It is perfectly and always does good to you.

C. It is extremely useful and convenient, but it may be inconvenient or even harmful.

D. It does more harm than good.

44. How did the sick old man keep in touch with his family members?

A. With the help of his computer.

B. By writing letters with his pen.

C. By making telephones calls.

D. By visiting them regularly.

45. According to the writer, traditional means of communication will never disappear because    .

A. they are convenient and popular though they are slow

B. they help to keep the friendly relationship between people

C. most people cannot keep up with the development of technology

D. modem means of communication does too much harm

閱讀理解
Man, a land animal. But he is also closely tied to the sea. Throughout history the sea has served the
needs of man. The sea has provided man with food and a convenient way to travel to many parts of the
world. Today, nearly two-thirds of the world's population lives within 80 kilometers of the sea coast.
In the modern technological world, the sea offers many resources to help mankind survive. Resources
on land are beginning to be used up. The sea, however, still can be hoped to supply many of man's needs.
The list of riches of the sea yet to be developed by man's technology is big. Oil and gas explorations
have been carried out for nearly 30 years. Valuable amounts of minerals exist on the ocean floor ready
to be mined.
Fish farming promises to be a good way to produce large quantities of food. The culture of fish and
shellfish (貝類動物) is an ancient skill practised in the past mainly by Oriental people, including people
in China.
Besides oil and gas, the sea may offer new sources of energy. Experts believe that the warm
temperature of the ocean can be used in a way similar to the steam in a steamship. Ocean currents and
waves offer possible use as a source of energy.
Technology is enabling man to explore ever more deeply under the sea. The development of strong,
new materials has made this possible.
The technology to harvest the sea continues to improve. Experts believe that by the year 2020 the
problems that prevent us from exploiting (開發) fully the food, minerals, and energy sources of the sea
