D
In this voyage I visited my new colony on the island, saw the Spaniards(西班牙人), had the whole story of their lives and of the villains(罪犯) I left there; how at first they treated the poor Spaniards badly,·how they afterwards agreed, disagreed, unired, separated, and how at last the Spaniards were forced to use violence with them; how they gave in to the spaniards, how honestly the Spaniards used them ---- a history, if it were entered into, as full of variety and wonderful
accidents as my own part ---- particularly, also, as to their battles with the Caribbeans, who landed several times upon the Island, and as to the improvement they made upon the Island itself, and how five of them made an attempt upon the main land, and brought away eleven men and five women prisoners, by which, at my coming, I found about twenty young children on the Island.
Here I stayed bout 20 days, left them supplies of all necessary things, and particularly of arms, powder, shot, cloths, tools, and two workmen, which I brought from England with me, namely a carpenter and a smith.
Besides this, I shared the Island into parts with them, reserved to myself the property of whole  but gave them such parts resoeetively as they agreed on; and having settled all things with them and encouraged them not to leave the place, I left them there.
From then on I landed the Brazils, from where I sent a bark, which I bought there, with more people to the island; and in it, besides other supplies, I sent seven women, being such persons as I found proper for service, or for wives to such as would take them. As to the Englishmen, I promised them to send them some women from England, with a good cargo(船貨) of necessaries, if they would apply themselves to planting ---- which I afterwards could not perform. And the fellows proved very honest and diligent after they were mastered and had their properties set apart for them. I sent them also from the Brazils five cows, three of them being big with calf, some sheep, and some pigs, which when I came again were considerably increased.
But all these things, with an account how 300 Caribbeans came and invaded(入侵) them, and ruined their plantations, and how they fought with that whole number twice, and were at first defeated, and one of them killed; but at last a storm destroying most of their enemies’ boats, they destroyed almost all the rest, and renewed and recovered the possession of their plantation, and still lived upon the Island.
All these things, with some very surprising incidents in some new adventures of my own,  for ten years more, I may perhaps give a further account of the story.
66. From Paragraph l, we know _______ .
A. the Spaniards were always getting along well with the villains
B. the Spaniards were always the rulers of the island
C. the Spaniards and the villains both ruled the island peacefully
D. the Spaniards and the villains once had battles witll each other

There are two elements in life that Americans do save carefully: time and labor. Americans are“slaves to nothing but the clock”, it has been said. Time is treated as if it were an almost tangible(看得到的)entity. In their language, there are words associated with it: time can be budgeted(預算), saved, wasted, stolen, killed, and cut. Americans also charge for time. It is a precious commodity (product) to them. Many people have a rather acute sense of the shortness of each lifetime. Once the sands have run out of a person's hourglass, they cannot be matter of patience. In the American system of values, patience is not a high priority. Many of them have what might be called “a short fuse”They begin to splutter(快速地說話)and move restlessly about if they feel time is slipping away without some return——be this in terms of pleasure, work value or rest.

Normally Americans do not assess (評定)their visitors in relaxed surroundings over prolonged small talk; much less do they take out for dinner, while they develop a pre-business sense of trust and rapport(和睦關系). Rapport to most of them is less important than performance. They seek out credentials(證明文件)of past performance rather than evaluating a business colleague through social manners. Since they generally assess and probe professionally rather than socially, they start talking business very quickly.

Most Americans live in time segments(parts)by engagement calendars. These calendars may be divided into intervals as short as fifteen minutes. They often “give” a person two or three (or more) segments of their calendar, but in the business world they almost always have other appointments following “hard on the heels of” whatever they are doing. Time is therefore always ticking in their inner ear.

(1) Which of the following is true according to the passage?

[ ]

A.Americans value time so mush that they use the hourglass to count their time.

[ ]

A.they even ask for money if you waste their time

B.they may become very impatient if they get nothing whatsoever in return for their time

C.they did not take their visitors out for din net

D.they seldom develop a rapport with their business colleagues

(3) What does the author mean by “a short fuse”(Para.2)?

[ ]

A.An impatient person who quickly gets impatient.

B.Person who likes to splutter.

C.A person who is very mean about his time.

D.A thing that is used to light a fire.

(4) In the last paragraph, the underlined phrase “on the heels of”means __________.

[ ]

A.being controlled by

B.behaving excitedly

D.close behind

It is unbelievable how popular English is in Venezuela(委內瑞拉).Now we have a kind of language mixture between English and Spanish.

In the Venezuelans’ daily conversations, they often use English words with Spanish verb endings. For example, if they send a fax(傳真), they use the word faxear, or if they have to click on the screen of their computer, they say clickear.

Also, they use simple English words in some Spanish sentences. You might hear someone say, “Voy a comprar unos jeans in el mall”which means“I’m going to buy some jeans in the mall,”or“Okey, vamos”which means“OK, let’s go”.

In addition, you see English names everywhere for restaurants, Crystal Ranch, stores, Area Company, gymnasiums, Sport Center, Athletic Center, malls, The Country, and night clubs, Studio Fifty Four.In Caracas(加拉加斯), there is a very fashionable neighborhood named Las Merce des, where each street has an American name like New York or Fifth Avenue. Therefore, when you go shopping, you can see signs in English in the windows of stores, such as On Sale.

In some Latin American countries, the increasing influence(影響)of English is a question often argued about. But in Venezuela, however, this is not the case.Venezuelans are open to receiving different cultural influences such as European fashion(時裝)and British music. Moreover, many Venezuelans don’t know where the words come from. They have been using them for years as a part of their language.

D
In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.
I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit(追求) of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.
However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try. ” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve(緩解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.
66. What does this passage mainly talk about?
A. Competition helps to set up self-respect
B. Opinions about competition are different among people.
C. Competition is harmful to personal quality development.
D. Failures are necessary experiences in competition
67. Why do some people favor competition according to the passage?
A. It pushes society forward                       B. It builds up a sense of duty.
C. It improves personal abilities.                 D. It encourages individual efforts.
68. The underlined phrase “the most vocal” in Paragraph 3 means__________.
A. those who try their best to win
B. those who value competition most highly
C. those who are against competition most strongly
D. those who rely on others most for success
69. What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a “desire to fail”?
A. One’s worth lies in his performance compared with others
B. One’s success in competition needs great efforts.
C. One’s achievement is determined by his particular skills
D. One’s success is based on how hard he has tried.
70. Which point of view may the author agree to?
A. Every effort should be paid back.
B. Competition should be encouraged.
C. Winning should be a life-and-death matter.
D. Fear of failure should be removed in competition.
