An idea that started in Seattle's public library has spread throughout America and beyond. The concept is simple: help to build a sense of community in a city by getting everyone to read the same book at the same time.
In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit(追求) to be enjoyed by all, the program allows strangers to communicate by discussing the book on the bus, as well as promoting reading as an experience to be shared in families and schools. The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who launched(發起) the "If All of Seattle Read the Same Book " project in 1998. Her original program used author visits, study guides and book discussion groups to bring people together with a book, but the idea has since expanded to many other American cities, and even to Hong Kong.
In Chicago, the mayor(市長) appeared on television to announce the choice of To Kill a Mockingbird as the first book in the "One Book, One Chicago" program. As a result, reading clubs and neighborhood groups sprang up around the city. Across the US, stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other at night and strangers chatting away on the bus about plot and character.
The only problem arose in New York, where local readers could not decide on one book to represent the huge and diverse population. This may show that the idea works best in medium-sized cities or large towns, where a greater sense of unity can be achieved. Or it may show that New Yorkers rather missed the point, putting all their energy and passion into the choice of the book rather than discussion about a book itself.
Ultimately, as Nancy points out, the level of success is not measured by how many people read a book, but by how many people are enriched by the process, or have enjoyed speaking to someone with whom they would not otherwise have shared a word.

The royal family is a part of British history and cultural identity.

Up until the 17th century, people believed that the British king or queen had a “divine(天賜的)right” to rule. This was the idea that God chose the king or queen and that he or she was therefore above the law. However, this idea was challenged during the English Civil War, when King Charles the First was put in prison and then killed in 1649.

So what role does the British royal family have today?

The Queen is head of the UK and the Commonwealth. She has important formal duties that go with her different titles. As Head of State, for example, she represents the UK on visits abroad and invites other world leaders to visit the UK;as Head of the Armed Forces in name, only she can declare when the UK is at war or when a war is over. She has to sign many government and Commonwealth documents every day.

Although the royal family does the work for the UK, there are British people called“anti-monarchists(反君主制者)”who do not believe there should be a royal family. One criticism(批評意見)is that the British people should not have to pay for the royal family with their taxes(稅).

Today, the royal family works hard to be relevant(相關的)in the modern world. The Queen still gives a speech to the nation on television at Christmas, but it gets less and less formal every year;now it is even available as a podcast(播客).

In 2005, after graduating from university, Prince William spent time teaching English in Uruguay, the sort of work many ordinary young British people do in their gap years.

1.What can be concluded from the first two paragraphs?

A.The British king or queen is considered above the law.

B.The English Revolution put an end to the British royal family in 1649.

C.The British king or queen is no longer believed to rule by divine right.

D.The royal family didn’t play an important role in Britain in the 17 th century.

2.Which of the following is among the formal duties of the Queen?

A.Traveling around the UK.

B.Declaring when the world is at war.

C.Inviting other leaders to have dinner with her.

D.Signing Commonwealth documents every day.

3.With the example of Prince William in the last paragraph, the author intends to show that         .

A.Prince William is very popular in the UK

B.the royal family is trying to connect better with ordinary people

C.Prince William has made an effort to win young people’s admiration

D.many young British people do voluntary work

4.It can be inferred from the passage that ___________.

A.the royal family doesn’t have to pay taxes

B.the British people are all in favor of the royal family

C.the British people can talk to the Queen through a podcast

D.the royal family attacks republicans through media and press

第二部分:閱讀理解(第一節20小題,第二節5小題;每小題2分,滿分50分)

第一節:閱讀下列短文, 從每題所給的四個選項 (A、B、C和D) 中, 選出最佳選項。

Being interested in a theme park since the time that I was a child, I have learned a thing or two over the years about packing for a day of fun. A trip to a theme park is always a adventure, but if you’re not prepared, your day of fun could easily turn into a tiny little nightmare(噩夢). It is important to pack long sleeved(帶袖的) shirts or jackets for all members of your family. I is also a good idea to pack an extra pair of socks for each member of the family, especially the children, as those wonderful water rides can be fun, but wet socks that won’t dry aren’t so much fun.

You don’t want to pack too much food, as you will probably want to experience at least some of the food offered at the theme park of your choice(that’s half of the fun), but it’s always a good idea to bring some energy increasing snacks, such as fruit, trail mix, etc. This can mean the difference between spending a lot of money on snacks or a little money on one or two good meals.

Theme parks, while fun and exciting, can wear a person out, especially a child, so it’s important to keep hydrated(含水的). I would suggest packing one bottle of water per person, and possibly a couple of cans of soda or bottles of juice as well.

It’s a good idea to have at least two cell phones or even a set of “walkie-talkies” in the event that your family gets, separated in the park. It’s a good idea to give one of these things to the children and one to the parents and make sure that each of them knows how to use it. This could be the difference between trouble and a happy ending,

1.You should get well prepared before going to a theme park__________.

  A. because the trip always costs much money

B.because there are always too many people in a theme park.

C. so as not to suffer from bad dreams when going back

D.so as to cut down your trip expenses and have more fun

2.From the passage, we can know_______________.

A.the author was fond of visiting theme parks when he was a child

B.wearing wet socks in a theme park will bring children much fun

C.it is terrible to have a taste of the food offered in a theme park.

D. we’d better bring enough food, clothing and water when going to a theme park

3.What does th underlined part”walkie-talkies” in the last paragraph probably refer to?

  A. A kind of transportation tool           B.A kind of musical instrument

C.A kind of CDplayer                  D.A kind of phone

4.How many types of things does the author advise us to pack for day trips to a theme park?

  A Three         B.Five      C.Six      D. Eight

Terry Fox was a young student who loved life. He was a sports fan. When he was just 18 years old, a terrible event happened: his right leg had to be cut off because of cancer. Such an experience would have destroyed a weaker person—but Terry Fox was a fighter. He refused to give up. Instead, while he was recovering from the operation, an idea slowly formed in his mind.
