Four Efficient Ways to Improve Your Speech

1. Use More Facial Expression

One psychologist feels that our facial expression is responsible more than anything else for the impression others have of us. In fact, more than 50 percent of another’s impression, he believes, is influenced by the look on your face. Naturally a smile in which the eyes participate is extremely communicative. An unfriendly look often brings the same thing in return. People tend to mirror your expression, so try to show how you feel about a topic or an idea or the audience through your facial expression.

2. Rid Your Inner Fear

It's natural to have some tension or nervousness when you appear before an audience. The way to handle it is to put it to work for you, get into action, as Shakespeare observed, action cures fear. There are only a few known ways to control fear. The first is to admit it, do the thing you fear and it will be the death of fear itself. Another simple aid at the last minute before you begin, is to take a few deep breaths, this will help get the butterflies in formation and also keep your voice under control. In fact, if you’re thoroughly prepared, just taking a few deep breaths before you’re introduced will give you added confidence and balance. Other known ways to control nervousness and fear are to give yourself an encouraging talk or take some physical exercise.

3. Polish Your Voice

Our voice is the main instrument we possess for communicating with people, we’re all sound sensitive. So invest in a tape recorder, practise your speech by speaking it into the microphone then listen to it. You can even have others join in the evaluation of your strong points and your weaknesses or faults as well. Remember that Demosthenes and Winston Churchill both used pebbles in their mouths while practising their speaking. Simply reading out loud can also help you improve your voice and develop a personal style.

4. Strengthen Your Memory

Psychologists tell us that most individuals don’t use above ten percent of their natural capacity for memory, that’s comparable to trying to run a car on one cylinder(汽缸). Why do most people use so little of their power of memory? Because they don’t practise the fundamentals of remembering. First and most important, it’s necessary to have a burning desire to remember, it’s difficult to recall anything without wanting to do so. Step number two is concentration. Henry Ward Beecher once observed, one hour of intense concentration can accomplish more than years of dreaming. The next principle is repetition, we learned many things in school by rote by repetition, when you hear a name for the first time repeat it, spell it, write it down, review it, you’ll soon know it by heart.

1.To make a good impression on others, you should pay special attention to your ______.

A. voice B. gestures

C. facial expression D. words

2.Which of the ways to rid yourself of your inner fear is NOT included in the passage?

A. take a deep breath

B. take some physical exercise

C. keep your voice under control

D. encourage yourself

3.You can improve our voice by ______.

A. listening to the tape

B. imitating others

C. keeping pebbles in your mouth

D. reading out loud

4.According to the article, which of the following is true?

A. We can strengthen our memory by practising.

B. We can remember things longer if we do not try to remember them on purpose.

C. Henry Ward Beacher believes that repetition is the key to long memory.

Computer programmer David Jones earns $35.000 a year designing new computer games, yet he cannot find a bank ready to let him have a credit card. Instead he has been told to wait another two years until he is 18. The 16-year-old works for a small firm in Liverpool where the problem of most young people of his age is finding a job. David’s firm releases two new games for the fast growing computer market each month.

But David’s biggest headache is what to do with his money. Even though he earns a lot he cannot drive a car, take out a mortgage(抵押貸款), or get credit cards. David got his job with the Liverpool-based company four months ago, a year after leaving school with six O-levels and working for a time in a computer shop. “I got the job because the people who run the firm knew I had already written some programs”, he said. David spends some of his money on records and clothes and gives his mother 50 pounds a week. But most of his spare time is spent working.

“Unfortunately, computing was not part of our studies at school”, he said “But I had been studying it in books and magazines for four years in my spare time. I knew what I wanted to do and never considered staying on at school. Most people in this business are fairly young, anyway.” David added, “I would like to earn a million and I suppose early retirement is a possibility. You never know when the market might disappear.”

1.In what way is David different from people of his age?

A. He often goes out with friends

Now many young people are traveling around the world on their own,not because they have no one to travel with, but because they prefer to go alone.

Kristina Wegscheider from California first traveled alone when she was at college and believes that it is something everyone should do at least once in their life. "It opens up your mind to new things and pushes you out of your comfort zone." Wegscheider has visited 46 countries covering all seven continents.

In foreign countries, with no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill,or lend you money if your wallet is stolen,it is challenging. This is what drives young people to travel alone. It is seen as character building and a chance to prove that they can make it on their own.

Chris Richardson decided to leave his sales job in Australia to go traveling last year. He set up a website,The Aussie Nomad,to document his adventures. He says he wished he had traveled alone earlier. "The people you meet, the places you visit,or the things you do,everything is up to you and it forces you to grow as a person," said the 30-year-old man.

Richardson describes traveling alone like "a shot in the arm",which "makes you a more confident person that is ready to deal with anything". He said,"The feeling of having overcome something on my own is a major part of what drives me each day when I’m dealing with a difficult task. I walk around with my head up because I know deep down inside that nothing is impossible if you try."

The great 19th century explorer John Muir once said,"Only by going alone in silence can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness."

1.Which of the following will Kristina Wegscheider agree with?

A. It is comfortable to travel around without a friend.

B. It is more meaningful to travel in foreign countries.

C. Traveling alone is a necessary experience for everyone.

D. Traveling abroad helps people to find new things.

2.Traveling alone is challenging because ________.

A. you can only depend on yourself whatever happens

B. it is hard for you to prove yourself to others

C. you have to make things on your own

D. it will finally build your character

3.What can we infer about Chris Richardson?

A. He started traveling alone at an early age.

B. He was once shot in the arm.

C. His website inspires others a lot.

D. He used to work as a salesman.

4.What is the best title for the passage?

A. Travel Abroad B. Travel Light

C. Travel Alone D. Travel Wide and Far

Humans have launched themselves into the outer space. They’ve landed on the moon. They’ve built habitable space stations that orbit the Earth. The next giant leap for mankind is to reach another planet – specifically, Mars.

The problem is that it’s no easy task. The planet is 586 times further away from the Earth than the moon, and it’ll take around 180 to 220 days to reach Mars, depending on where each planet is in its orbit. Such long periods in space have suggested many potential health problems, including hormonal changes, skin conditions, and muscle and bone deterioration (損耗).

Here’s where some furry friends come in. A wide range of animals have been in space, from fruit flies and spiders to cats, and dogs. Such experiments began as far back as the late 1940s in first tests to see if living things could withstand the extreme g-force (重力) of a rocket launch.

Mice continue to play a very important part in space experiments, mainly because the animals make excellent test subjects. They’re small, which makes them inexpensive and easy to care for. In addition, their size and short life span make it possible to do the equivalent of several human years of tests in a much shorter time. Finally, because mice are mammals, they share many common characteristics with humans in terms of genetics, biology and behavior.

Astromice have hit the headlines recently, as a team of scientists led by Betty Nusgens, professor of biology at the University of Liege in Belgium, found that the mice suffered a 15 percent thinning of their skin after 91 days aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

This experiment was part of a wider NASA mission (任務) called the Mice Drawer System (MDS). The Italian Space Agency developed the facility, which allows six mice to be housed, monitored, and automatically fed and watered aboard the ISS, among which three survived during the mission.

The mice have participated in 20 separate experiments, to study such effects as osteoporosis (骨質疏松癥), anemia (貧血) and heart health.

Results for the 20 experiments are coming in gradually. But it’s clear that mice continue to play an important role in the ongoing quest to conquer the final frontier.

1.We can infer from Paragraphs 2-3 that ______.

A. Mars is the farthest planet away from Earth discovered so far

B. animals that have been sent into space have mostly survived

C. it was in the late 1940s that animals were first sent to the ISS

D. the journey to Mars could put humans’ health at risk

2.The underlined word “withstand” in Para.3 means _________.

A.set up B. come across

C. work out D. hold up

3.According to Betty Nusgens and her team, the mice aboard the ISS ______.

A. all survived for the duration(期間) of the mission

B. suffered the loss of part of their skin

C. were fed and watered by the astronauts

D. participated in 20 experiments that made great breakthroughs

4. The main purpose of the article is to _____.

A. analyze how mice could pave the way to Mars

B. report on the results of the Mice Drawer System

C. describe the role mice play in scientific research

D. change people’s traditional attitudes toward mice

科目:高中英語 來源:2017屆安徽蚌埠二中高三上期中考試英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

Sandra Bullock turned 51 last month. But because she looks exactly the same as she did in Miss Congeniality, a movie filmed back in the 20th century, everyone calls her “ageless.” Bullock is just one of a number of stars in their 40s and 50s who’ve had birthdays recently but have not gotten older, unlike the rest of us in their age group. Take Halle Berry. One website put a photo of her 20 years ago next to one of the newly 49-year-old Berry and dared us to choose which was which. “This Is What 49 Looks Like,” it said. Seriously, if that’s what 49 looks like, I must be 71.

However, even a generation ago, famous faces evolved. Look at a picture of Grace Kelly at age 52 in the early 1980s. She looks like a beautiful middle-aged woman. Today she’d look old for her age.

The goal now is to prevent aging while you are still young, using all the magical nonsurgical options medicine has to offer. Eventually these techniques will become less expensive, and ordinary people my daughter’s age will have them. Already anti-aging is starting to be considered maintenance, like coloring your hair. My friends and I find ourselves openly debating techniques that we used to make fun of. Does fat-freezing work? How much time do you have to spend in the gym to keep the body of a 35-year-old after 50? It’s all so exhausting. But members of the next generation have it tougher. They’ll have to ask themselves whether they want to spend their youth trying not to get old. I’ve already seen “Sexy at 70” headlines. Will everyone be expected to go to their graves(墳墓) looking hot?

I also have to wonder what else we are slowing along with age. How do you move on if you’re working so hard to stay the same? And besides, if you’ve known the ache of watching a daughter pack up for college, you know you can’t stop the clock.

1.In the author’s eyes, Sandra Bullock ________.

A. doesn’t deserve her name

B. doesn’t look her age at all

C. behaves like a young woman

D. looks younger than Halle Berry

2.The example of Grace Kelly is given to show ________.

A. physical beauty never lasts long

B. there is no such thing as agelessness

C. people’s attitude towards aging has changed

D. stars pay too much attention to their appearance

3.Where do the author’s concerns about anti-aging techniques lie?

A. They expose people to danger.

B. They make people feel stressful

C. They are too expensive for ordinary.

D. They encourage comparisons among people.

4.What’s the purpose of the text?

A. To show the burden of youth.

B. To offer tips on how to look hot.

C. To advise people to accept aging.

D. To comment on some famous stars.
